MonkeyFest 2018 Keynote: 25 years of software: A retrospective

25 years ago is when Laurent wrote his first line of code. Hard to believe that time flies so fast when you have fun!

25 years ago, software development was very different… or was it? Development environments were maybe not that powerful, we were running on a lot less RAM and CPU, but we were already architecting systems, converting code in bytes, running machines and connecting them with networks. We had We maybe didn't have all these fancy SPAs and Clouds, but we had Internet and a web browser. A few years later we would even get JavaScript and start coding pretty cool web apps and the world would never quite be the same anymore.

.NET Standard, .NET Core, why and how?

.NET Standard is the new way to create portable assemblies. After learning about portable class libraries in the past years, it is now time to upgrade our game and start coding for Linux, Mac OS and other platforms in addition to Windows. More and more libraries are getting ported to .NET Standard, sometimes really easily and sometimes more painfully. In this session, Laurent Bugnion, the creator of the popular open source MVVM Light Toolkit, will help you understand why .NET Standard can benefit you. We'll talk about ASP.NET Core, see how easily we can containerize and deploy our web applications to Linux on Azure. Finally Laurent will also talk about his experiences converting his open source framework to .NET Standard.

Turbocharged platform development with Xamarin and Blazor

Blazor is a .NET web framework that runs in any browser. Authoring Blazor apps uses C#/Razor and HTML. No JavaScript needed.
Blazor uses only the latest web standards. No plugins or transpilation needed. It runs in the browser on a real .NET runtime (Mono) implemented in WebAssembly that executes normal .NET assemblies. It works in older browsers too by falling back to an asm.js based .NET runtime.
Xamarin.Forms exposes a complete cross-platform UI toolkit for .NET developers, allowing to build fully native Android, iOS, Universal Windows Platform, Linux, MacOs, Tizen, tvOS, watchOS, PWA apps using C# in Visual Studio.
Using both technologies in parallel allows development acceleration of 360 portal ecosystems complete with native mobile apps, mobile PWA, LOB website through code, CI and expertise sharing.

Bot Framework with Xamarin

The Bot Builder SDK for .NET is an easy-to-use framework for developing bots using Visual Studio and Windows. The SDK leverages C# to provide a familiar way for .NET developers to create powerful bots. This session walks you through building a bot using the Bot Application with Xamarin.
