What we're about

We create a space where writers can simply come and get work done with their peers. Manuscripts, screenplays, articles, theses, blogs, indecipherable scribbles, or even a finely crafted email, you just show up, chat a little bit, and then get down to business. Everyone in this group can nudge or shove themselves into gear as they see fit. In the end, it’s all about making the time to sit down, shut up, and write.

Sit Down Open Up & Share Your Writing -- Sundays

Online event

Please RSVP to calendar the event.

As part of our ongoing variation and experimentation, on Sundays, we're trying something new. Rather than write, we'll take five minutes per writer to share an excerpt from the previous week's work. We're not looking for polished pieces, just the satisfaction of letting other writers see what we're working on and where we are in our current project.

We don't critique the work, but we may choose to say something supportive and positive about the reading.

When all the writers have finished their 5-minute segments, we'll stop, whatever time that may be, but no later than 3:30 p.m.

Our regular sessions of "Sit Down Wake Up and Write" are Monday through Friday by Zoom from 6:15 a.m. to 8:15 a.m., with dedicated writing from 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. US/Pacific Time. Our writers use this structure as an accountability tool to advance their writing goals.

It's okay to arrive after our session begins. You'll be admitted from the waiting room, but please don't interrupt any reading that may be in progress.

All writers of all genres, fiction or non-fiction, and all degrees of skill and success, either published or unpublished are welcome to join us.

Why write with us? We’re a way to increase your writing productivity.

1. Build confidence. Write something each day, and you’re a writer.
2. Defeat procrastination by using a structured time and place each day for writing with other writers.
3. Gain momentum and reach milestones. Feel good about making progress.
4. One finished project leads to another. You can say “I did it!”
5. Improve in the craft of writing.

Here's the method to the madness:

Arrive at 6:15 a.m. Pacific Time. We warm up with a short discussion on the craft or quickie writing prompt.

We start writing on our individual primary projects promptly at 6:30 a.m. with audio muted & video off. [If you arrive after 6:30, please disable audio and video on arrival.]
We end promptly at 8:00 a.m., unmuting and resuming video.
From 8:00 to 8:15, and sometimes no later than 8:30 a.m. we again discuss the craft or occasionally will share our work without critiquing.

Then, on Sundays at 2:15 p.m. join us to read a short excerpt from the preceding week during our "Sit Down Shut Up and Write" session.
