I watched the presentation on the WTC collapse. There is a lot of detail in the report. The computer model used to simulate the event took months to run on a fairly capable computer. Something on the order of 3 million points were used in the analysis and the model was run under various conditions.

I've read the preliminary reports that were released earlier. Then their best guess was a failure of column 79. They came to that conclusion through structural analysis and the photographic evidence collected during the 7 hours of watching the building burn.

The just released report substantiates that guess with further analysis and months of computer simulation. I haven't studied their report on the other two towers (WTC1 and WTC2) but apparently WTC7 was the most complicated.
