September 2014 Hackathon - Game AI

Starting on Friday at 6:00 pm a server will open up that coordinates matches. The game will be announced at that point, and skeleton code for a bot will be provided. The game is relatively simple, requires two bots for a match, involves chance, and is a partial information game. Each match will involve ~30 actions per player, resulting in quick matches. NPC bots will be provided to play against, in addition to bots run by the players. Statistics will be collected on all games played and published to help in improving player bots. The event will end after 48 hours, Sunday at 6:00 pm.

Note that there is no requirement for players be on site at any point during this competition, but there will be a collaborative environment and activities related to this theme at the space all day Saturday.

Stupendeous! Gives me a reason to learn new tech! Although I'm jealous of people working in tech they already know! ;)

The API and Game have been announced, and the SDK has been released. Go check it out at http://gameai.skullspace.ca/.

Will this be fairly easy or difficult coding? This sounds cool but I'm inexperienced with most languages, though willing to try it if it's not necessary to be particularly skilled.

It's the easiest coding I could think of that would still be interesting to people. I'm trying to make it simple and fairly hard to mess up.

I do json all day, but I'm only just learning Scala. Figure it'll balance out.

So should we be coding this beforehand?

Nope, everyone gets the info on the Friday. We'll be putting out a little info page which will include links to resources as well as the code for the NPC bots. So you'll have enough at the start to at least match the level of the (stupid) NPCs.
