Redearth Creek (Banff) - Intermediate XC Ski (No Beginners) & Hot Springs

Redearth Creek Trail -

Intermediate XC Ski (No Beginners)

followed by

Saturday, March 2, 2013 - 8:00 AM

The trail climbs gradually through lodgepole pine forests to the Shadow Lake Trail. The last few kilometers to the highway can be exhilarating.

  • Distance: 22 Km Return (to the turnoff to Shadow Lake)
  • Elevation Gain: 300 m
  • Time: 5-6 hours on at a moderate pace
  • Location: Trailhead: Redearth Creek Trailhead, 20 km west of Banff on the Trans-Canada Highway.
  • RSVP's open Monday, February 11, 2013 at 7:00am

The trail along the fire road, a far as the turn off to Shadow Lake is easy. Cross through the metal animal fence by using the gate provided, then ski west along the trail, up the hillside. After about 300 m the trail swings left through the forest and soon joins the fire road. The road is wide and the skiing easy. After 6km the road descends gently to the creek and crosses it. There are picnic tables and an outhouse on the far side. The road continues up the right bank of the creek for another 5 km to the Shadow Lake turn-off. This will be our turn around point for the day.

Time permitting, we will stop for a dip in the Banff Hot Springs and grab some coffees/hot chocolates for the ride home. PLAN FOR A FULL DAY OUT. WE WILL RETURN IN LATE AFTERNOON

You must come prepared for this ski with water, food, multiple clothing layers, toque, & mitts - all appropriate for x-country skiing. You must know how to use your gear & be able to wax your skis (unless you have waxless).

Carpool fare will be $20.00 per passenger for this trip, as this trip is within Zone 3, park passes are required.

Waivers: As per the new policy for waivers, I will bring the group waiver form with me to both the Calgary Meetup location and the trailhead. You must sign it before you will be allowed to go on this event. You will also be asked for the name and phone number of an emergency contact. Please come prepared with this information.

You are fully aware that organizers are not professional guides and you assume all responsibility for your safety and well-being. You are fully prepared with proper gear and you're physically fit to do this event with the group.

Wasn't crazy about the weather, couldn't reach everyone so those of us who met at Shouldice ended up doing a short xc ski in Peter Lougheed Park starting at the Boulton Creek parking lot. Trails were soft and close to slushy, but we managed and had a fun short day out. Thanks Guys!

Weather and road conditions in Banff this morning are not good. I recommend we reschedule or change to COP for skills practice. If I don't hear from all of you I will be at Shouldice and we will decide from there. Please respond ASAP. Sorry for the short notice.

We might join you at the end of the day for making bubbles in the tub and then sipping bubbles in the pub after our snowshoe to Stanley Glacier.
