Slow and Steady Anniversary Picnic

THIS IS FOR PICNIC ONLY. STARTS AT 5 PM AT LOCATION TO BE DETERMINED.

Picnic Site changed to: Canoe Meadows Day Use Area.

Directions: Take Hwy 40 south for 5.9 km ( approx ) The day use area is on the right side of the road. I think it is signed. It is just before the Barrier Lake Information Centre.

This will be more convenient for everyone, especially those wishing to join us from Yamnuska and Calgary.

This year for our 2nd anniversary I thought we'd try something different. We will have a choice of a few hikes in the vicinity of Ha Ling. This will be followed by a Picnic.

Ha Ling was our original (#1) hike when Slow and Steady started in September 2011. We've grown a little since then. So instead of one hike lets do a bunch and all meetup after.

So here's some choices: All will have an organizer or 2 or 3 tagging along.

YOU CAN RSVP FOR THESE HIKES ON SEPARATE TRIP POSTINGS.

1. Ha Ling ( T4, 4.5KM return, 740 meters) If you haven't yet bagged an official Rockies peak this should be your first.

2. EEOR ( S5 6.5KM return, 900 meters ) Also known as the East End of Rundle. Wave to your friends on Ha Ling. Maybe they'll wave back. Andy Dragt will organize this trip.

3. Lawrence Grassi ( S6, 7KM return, 940 meters ) Ha Lings higher neighbour. Mostly a grunt to the top with some fun scrambling near the summit. You can wave to your friends on Ha Ling but EEOR may be a bit far.  Jessica Caden will organize this trip.

4. Old Goat Glacier ( OT4 , 10.5 KM return, 640 meters ) Hike to a hanging canyon gouged by Old Goat Glacier. Awesome views of Spray Lakes. Maybe see your friends on Lawrence Grassi.  Karen L will organize this trip.

5. Westwind Pass ( T3,  8.4 KM return, 350 meters ) Hike to a nice viewpoint of Spray Lakes. This route contnues on to the Windtower but that will be for another day and is also a scramble.

6. Grassi Lakes ( T2 ) For those maybe wishing a later start and an easier option. MAYBE IF I FIND AN ORGANIZER TO DO THIS ONE

Organizers will be posting separate hike pages for these this week, so sign up for the hike of your ability and we will all meet up at bow valley provincial park for a picnic after the hikes.

The idea would be to start meeting at the picnic area between 4 and 5 PM. Bring hot dogs, sausages, salads chips, marshmallows, pop and of course "some" beers ( we have to be careful with those ). Lawn chairs may also come in handy.

Any other hike ideas in the area are welcomed also, Just let us know.

Gas fees are $20 per passenger .

View from EEOR to Ha Ling and Lawrence Grassi. Spray Lakes is in the distance.

Lawrence Grassi from Ha Ling - Karen L's boots

Waivers: As per the new policy for waivers; I will bring the group waiver form with me to both the Calgary Meetup location and the trailhead. You must sign it before you will be allowed to go on this hike. You will also be asked to provide the name and phone number of an emergency contact. You are fully aware that organizers are not professional guides and you assume all responsibility for your safety and well-being. You are fully prepared with proper gear and you're physically fit to do this hike with the group

Far from the numbers and weather we hoped for we still spent over 2 hours picnicing and enjoying the fire and each others company. It sure beat last years attempt when it rained so hard we couldn't even open the windows on our vehicles to talk to each other. This was fun and a change from the Pub. :) Happy Anniversary it was :)

Thanks everyone it was a good time. Little Evan enjoyed his first trip to the mountains. He really liked eating all the food given to him. The sugar high wore off about midnight.

I had my doubts when we arrived at the parking lot in the pouring rain, but once the rained stopped & the fire was going it was lots of fun!! Thanks for the non-stop organizing & re-organizing on this & HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!

The meetup site will be down for maintenance tomorrow morning from 6-8 (during which time many of us will be already heading to our meeting spots), so when should we check back to see if the picnic or any of the hikes have been cancelled or postponed?

    September 6, 2013

    • Andy D.

Shut down between 6 to 8 AM Eastern Time.

      September 6, 2013

Too busy now at work and I will not be able to join you. Happy anniversary!

    September 5, 2013

  • Andy D.

There are fire pits at driftwood so we can roast marshmallows and weiners. For burgers you'll have to bring a portable bbq. This IS NOT a pot luck. Bring your own picnic food. Lawn chairs may also be a good idea if you have them. Now if only the rain will stay away. :)

    September 5, 2013

    • Felicia M.

You may want to send out an email to everyone letting them know its not a potluck, because the description still says its a potluck picnic.. It's in the paragraph after the driving directions

      September 5, 2013

    • Andy D.

      Thanks Jerome.

Not sure if a location for the Picnic has been decided but Edworthy park by shaganappi trail and bowness road might work. Should work as people come in town from the west. Just a suggestion.

    1 · September 5, 2013

    • Andy D.

Want to keep it in the mountains. Edworthy has to be booked for large groups. We will use it for future events though as we have in the past.

      September 5, 2013

    • Grant

      Ok no problem

      September 5, 2013

If an organizer will setup a posting for noon departure - I will manage it through comments section. Timing it to meet with picnic.

If some of the hikers like hot food, I'd bring "Salsa Verde" (green onions, cilantro and serrano peppers) to dip potato chips, put on top of the steak, etc. Comments?

    3 · September 2, 2013

  • Felicia M.

With regards to the potluck afterwards, does anyone have any serious allergies that the rest of us should be aware of?

    August 31, 2013

  • Jessica C.

Andy, you should close this hike so that people register properly in the individual events. Maybe do a separate "event" for the afterparty. A new separate event.

    2 · August 28, 2013

    • Andy D.

I will straighten it out. Seems a bit confusing for some.

Does anyone know a trail from Mt. Grassi to Ha Ling? The one I found (but couldn't make alone) looked like S6+. It may be an interesting additional option to this anniversary meetup if led by a climber.

    1 · August 13, 2013

    • Mike S.

I've wanted to try this, but I don't think it would be an appropriate option for the anniversary day.

      2 · August 14, 2013

I will lead Old Goat Glacier but will need some specific directions from someone who has done it before and knows the area. Thanks.
