Holy Cross Mountain Moderate Scramble

Sure, you could bypass this to the left, but how much fun would that be?

To Attend: review event details and answer the questions in RSVP

The Basics:
Event Type: S6 Scramble http://www.meetup.com/Slow-and-Steady-Hikers/pages/Trail_Rating_System/
Event Location: Kananaskis (Highwood)
Event Duration: 8-10 hours + driving
Difficulty Rating: S6: Difficult and Strenuous

Distance: 18 km
Elevation Gain: ~1200m total
(Please note that times listed above are only estimations. Trip could be longer or shorter depending on conditions of terrain, weather and group.)

Event Directions: From Calgary head out West on 22x, turn South on 22 towards Turner Valley. From here we go East on 22 to Black Diamond and turn South, following 22 to Longview. From here turn on to 541 west then follow this to where you park on the side of the road at or near Gunnery Creek or ridge. If you pass a group of Ranger cabins you have gone too far.

Please Note: This will be an exploratory first ascent.

Note: You must have completed at least three OT4 + hikes/scrambles with at least 800m elevation gain recently in order to attend. Your Event Host will be checking your event history. The even host has the right to and will remove past problem attendees. Although we will be going at a slower pace, this is not an event for beginners and you must be comfortable with difficult hiking/moderate scrambling on loose rock. The event host has final say on route - he likes to climb.

Itinerary:
The mountain gets its name from a cross feature in the east side that shows up to varying degrees depending on the snow conditions. The route is fairly straight forward. The first part is an easy hike. Follow the trail (human or animal) that follows the natural least line of resistance to the top of Gunnery ridge. Expect some bushwhacking and route finding here.  From here we will scramble up the ridge north east to the shoulder of Holy Cross Mountain to the summit.  We will return either via the ridge or the gully.

Participant Info:

Who's Invited: Members Only
Are Dogs Permitted: No

Required personal gear: Sturdy hiking footwear, layered clothing with a waterproof shell, rock helmet, personal first aid kit, mountaineering axe, microspikes or crampons that are compatible with your boots, snowshoes, headlamp(s) with extra batteries, emergency bivy, food and water - you can never have too much

Recommended personal gear: Hiking poles, gaiters, map/compass, sit harness, ATC and locking pear shaped biner, 5-6mm cord for prussik, camera

Required group gear (that I have): 30M 8MM rope, large group first aid kit, anchor kit (webbing, 7mm cord, rap rings, mallions, pitons)

IMPORTANT - Read:
• We will stay together as a group.
If you like to race ahead or race to the top, do not sign up for this event.
• Do not be in a rush to get back to Calgary.
We will be out to enjoy the day and event duration may vary.

Real-time tracking while we're out, feel free to share with emergency contacts. Be aware this is not always 100% and authorities shouldn't be called because it misses a few updates.

WAIVERS: As per the new policy for waivers; I will bring the group waiver form with me to both the Calgary Meetup location and the trailhead. You must sign it before you will be allowed to go on this hike. You will also be asked to provide the name and phone number of an emergency contact. You are fully aware that organizers are not professional guides and you assume all responsibility for your safety and well-being. You are fully prepared with proper gear and you're physically fit to do this hike with the group.

Breaking through your own path you have chances to discover your own previously unknown gold cave. Is there anything to regret indeed, even if you didn't find it this time? ;)

Hey guys, I've never done this mountain but I'm fairly sure the route is safe from Avi risk (we follow the ridge) However, if at any time it seems concerning, we'll be turning around.

This can be an EPIC trip with soft snow on it! Even in the summer it is a looong trip…. I can give you some beta if you want but the main thing is to get off trail on the right spot. If you take a left too soon you will do a lot of side hilling on Gunnery ridge in deep soft snow. If you take the left too late… you gain a lot of steep elevation (loosing time) that you have too loose it again to get to the base of the mountain.

The wind there is terrible if it's a bad forecast with snow and such. Wish to join but I am nursing my knee after Eiffle Peak scramble. HAVE FUN!

. I attempted twice this past winter and I got turned back because of the snow conditions and because we left the snowshoes in the car. “So is the man” has a good gps track for a different route that it will take you directly at the start of the ridge. We got there by mistake on one of our attempts and it look better than the classic route that involves a some elevation gain and loss before you will get to the mountain.
