Robinson Preserve Eco-Kayak Adventure!

  • This location is shown only to members

Hi Sailors, How about something a little different?  Brian is an eco-tour kayak guide for a local adventure company, and he has offered his services to our group!  Join us on 1/18/14 for a kayak tour of Robinson Preserve.  We will explore the waterways, coves and shady mangrove tunnels!  We will have the opportunity to see eagles, osprey, herons, pelicans, many types of gulls, fish and aquatic critters in Perico Bay.  Before or after our adventure, you will have a chance to climb to the top of the 53 ft. tall observation tower to view the park and surrounding waterways.

Robinson Preserve is a 487 acres peninsula that wraps around Tampa Bay’s southern tip into the Perico Bay, the preserve was converted from farmland over a two year period, after being rescued from development by Manatee County.  More on the preserve at:  http://www.mymanatee.org/home/government/departments/parks-and-recreation/natural-resources/preserves/robinson-preserve.html

Brian will transport the kayaks to Robinson Preserve, set them up, and guide the tour.  The kayak rental and transport will cost $40, a reasonable price based on a comparison of local kayak tour companies.  If you have your own kayak, of course you are welcome to join us!  When you RSVP, you will be asked if you will need to rent a kayak, or if you are joining us with your own kayak.  As usual, be prepared to get wet, bring lunch and fluids, sunscreen, hat and water shoes.  We will meet in the Robinson Preserve parking lot at 10:30, with estimated launch time at around 11 am.  Certainly, if any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact me.

OK, intrepid water enthusiasts...looking forward to another fun adventure!

Bob, just to confirm...you are bringing your own kayak, and don't need a rental, right?

Hi all, lots of changes in RSVPs! Here is where we stand: Ed, Harriet and Jan will be renting kayaks from Brian. Ken and his friend, Rob and Bob are bringing their own kayaks. I am borrowing a kayak from Ken (thanks, Ken!). Will bring a gallon of hot spiced apple cider to share with all. My foot cast came off this week, and I am happy about my new found mobility! Stuff happens, so if you need to change your RSVP, only let us know. My cell phone number is[masked] in case someone is lost or running late tomorrow morning. See y'all soon!

Hi Jan, no worries! The Brian who cancelled is not the Brian who rents the kayaks, Brian Dahms of Bimini Bay sailing. I spoke with Brian this morning, and he said the rental kayaks are already loaded for tomorrow morning. I hope tomorrow is as beautiful as today!!! Looking forward to our outing!

Sorry to have caused you confusion! Hope everyone has a great time. I downloaded the trail map for the preserve, it includes the kayak trails so I'll try and make it some other time, I just won't have the great company of the group.

Sorry to change my RSVP, but I got an awful cold this week. I need to take it easy and don't want to share with others. Have fun!

I'll be there. Hoping for light wind so it won't feel so cool.

We will be there with three kayaks, three paddles and 3 pfd's and two wetsuits ... Suggest others dress warm also...

Went outside for a few minutes during my lunch break... what a gorgeous day!!! Can only hope & dream that Saturday will be as beautiful! Spoke with Brian and we are both resolved to kayak on Saturday... even if only us two! Hope to see y'all there...

    January 16, 2014

Hi all, according to the weather report, Saturday is supposed to be a bit cool! Not ready to reschedule, just yet. Let's continue to follow the weather forecast...they often change as we move closer to the date! In the event that it is cool outside, it is of most importance to wear layers and keep your core warm. I will bring extra women's jackets/windbreakers, and I also have 2 women's shorty wetsuits to loan out. I will plan to bring some hot spiced cider for the group! If you feel the weather is too extreme, no worries! Only please change your RSVP by Friday afternoon...this will especially be important for those renting kayaks.

Hi all, I am excited about our adventure next Saturday! Here is where we are: Jackie, Ed & Harriet, Jennifer, Jan and Annette will be renting kayaks. Ann, Rob, Brian & his guest, and Ken and his guest will be bringing their own kayaks. Art is going to bring his SUP; and I am borrowing a kayak. We have one spot available. If your plans change, please please be considerate to others and update your RSVP! Thanks in advance to everyone...

Hi Jan, Brian has sit-on-top kayaks, only. But, he says they won't flip like the sit-in kayaks, and they are easier for portage in too shallow areas. Hope this will work out for you for the afternoon...

That's good to know. The water is too dang cold to even think about flipping!!

Ken and his friend are bringing their own kayaks; so is Ann. I am borrowing a kayak, Jay is looking to borrow a kayak.

I would love to attend this event. Since I am new to the area, I would assume we would meet at the parking lot at the Preserve. I would need to rent a kayak. I just sold my kayak and can't wait to see the new and exciting nature of the sea coast.
