• Weekly Maker Mingling

    SnoCo Makerspace - Purple Room

Good news everybody! Snohomish County is now in phase three (3) and we can now start doing in person open houses again as long as we don't exceed 24 people in the building. Masks are still required at this stage as well as social distancing. We look forward to seeing you.

Thursday night is "Open" time for all members in good standing come in and work, chat, and collaborate. It's usually mostly a social event but feel free to come in and work, just watch out for non-member tourist safety. Chas & Kelly host this weekly event, ask either for details.

Non-members, please feel free to come by for a tour, hang out, meet some fellow makers, and we will answer any questions you might have. Non-members are not allowed to operate or use any tools during this time; that includes both powered and non-powered. We require a basic safety course for all tool use, a signed waiver, and most importantly our insurance doesn't allow for it.

IMPORTANT: We can not guarantee we are open past 8PM, if it's a gloomy night and no one shows we will close early. Usually we are kicking people out at or after 9; but keep it in mind if you are arriving late.

PARKING: Parking fills up in the two spots we have in front of our suite. Before 5PM Park in the spots on the right before the building as you enter the driveway.

VISITORS: As you enter our suite please proceed upstairs. You must be escorted in the downstairs shop area.

  • CNC Router 101 / Shapeoko 3 XL certification

    SnoCo Makerspace - Shop

Learn how to prep a design and run it on the CNC Router.

After successful demonstration of skills learned and proper safety practices in this workshop you will be certified to use the Shapeoko 3 XL CNC Router*.

A CNC router cuts material (woods/plastics) with a router and end mill bits with 2.5D design. This workshop requires a little more out of you than most of our workshops. You are required to commit to perform prework. You will not be certified to use the router if you didn't do your prework. Prework is sent to people who RSVPed 4-5 days before the meetup, it takes a few hours to complete. *PRE-WORK EMAIL GOES OUT BY MEETUP E-MAIL* -- If you unsubscribed to meetup emails or filter meetup e-mails you'll miss your prework. Contact the host [masked] if you don't get your pre-work 4 days before the class OR if you RSVP 4 or fewer days before the event.

Safety: We recommend long sleeve shirts, you are required to have close-toe shoes, bring your own eye and hearing protection if you don't want to use our shared PPE.

To comply with the makerspace covid response you must comply with this safety requirement:
COVID SAFETY: YOU MUST BRING AND WEAR A FACEMASK OVER YOUR MOUTH AND NOSE AT ALL TIMES. WE WILL BE ABLE TO SOCIAL DISTANCE FOR MOST OF THE CLASS BUT THE INSTRUCTOR WILL BE WITHIN 3FT OF YOU AT SOME TIMES.
NO GUESTS/FOUR (4) PEOPLE MAX + THE INSTRUCTOR.
If you can not comply you will not be allowed to attend.

Gotchas: Some people are surprised that we don't provide access to shared router bits. Milling bits are costly, a consumable, and are easily damaged by misuse and mistakes. You will be using the host's bits for this event but will need to buy your own for future use (we provide some recommendations). If you want to buy one for use during this workshop a decent low cost bit can be purchased here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001VY3664/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_U_x_S3ImCb8R9R3H2
This will tackle up to 1/2" HDPE and some other materials.

    Cost:
Full Members: $50 (includes cost of consumables we will pre-purchase for you.) Contact before paying if your strapped for cash and need a discount
    Pay/RSVP here: https://snocomakers.wildapricot.org/event-4313954

We don't recommend this class for non-members and limited members as you wouldn't be able to use the machine but if you want to learn this working into a membership there is a non-member payment option online ($70). Non-members must pre-pay, or contact us with compelling reason you can't pre-pay; we will drop your RSVP if you don't prepay... class size is limited and we often get non-members no-showing..

Exact change ( we don't have access to change) @ the workshop is fine as well; show up 10 minutes early to pay if you need to pay at the event. Your prerequisite work will include installation of software on a Windows 7, 8, or 10 or Mac laptop; we are out of lender laptops right now. If you don't have a Windows or Mac laptop you can ask Chas for details on how to use the computer in the makerspace to perform your prework. We can only offer limited support on Mac PCs (we don't have any)

*Only members in good standing can use tools at SnoCo Makerspace outside of workshops.

Lab: Setup and weld using a MIG welder. We will be doing some basic joining of metal. If you want to bring something small you can but depending on size, material and time we may not allow you the opportunity; feel free to reach out to me before attending.

You should be able to walk away with a basic understanding of how to weld. If we feel you got the basics down enough to be safe and use the machine safely you will be allowed to use the welder.
