3/4 fishing trip on the Victory, long beach

ANOTHER VICTORY TRIP!!!!  It looks like this July thang is becoming an annual event for the group!  I know I am announcing this waaaaayyyy in advance,  but who cares-make plans to be there!

If you have wanted to go fishing with our group and have been looking for the right opportunity - this is it.  This is the one.  Whether you've never been fishing or are an experienced angler, this trip will be great for you.

This is such a great boat.  Here's why:  Cap'n Mike and his trusty crew are great guys - really nice and extremely helpful. The beauty of the VICTORY is that everyone is assigned a spot to stand on the boat. This means no worrying about other anglers trying to snag your spot (rude!!).  Thing is, we have to get there early, early, early - or all the good spots will be sold out.

Here's the plan:

Event: 3/4 day fishing on the Victory

When: July 6, 2013. Saturday. Boat leaves at 6:00 a.m. and return between 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. (recommend getting to landing by 4:00-5:00 a.m.)

Where: Pierpoint Landing, Long Beach

Ticket price: $55.00 per person at the landing (no guarantee on spot). Tickets go on sale around 5:00 a.m. People start getting in line for the good spots at about 3:30 a.m.!!

Last year,  we got a rate of $45.00 per person for the group.  We are getting it again this year!

Parking: $3.00; If parked in spots 1-21 in the main parking lot. Get a pass and put it in your car dashboard. If you are not in the first 21 spaces. Get a token and go park in the secondary parking lot that is past the bridge. Parking enforcement is very strict. You can also park in the parking structure (prices unknown).

Rental rods are around $10.00-$12.00 per day.  Everyone over 16 needs to have a fishing license. If you need to rent rods or get a day license I recommend getting to the landing around 5:00 a.m.. The office will be busy with people buying tickets and licenses.

Here,   however,  is the good news...if you have not had a chance to get out fishing this year before this event,  you won't need a license for this day! http://www.dfg.ca.gov/licensing/fishing/freefishdays.html

See,  I just saved you 10-15 bucks right there!

Tackle: you only need to buy some 3-4oz torpedo sinkers and hooks - sizes 2 or 4. 12lb test line is good but I've used 8, 10, 20....

Bring money for the galley (food), parking ($3.00), jack pot on the boat (optional $5.00), tip money for the crew (recommend $5.00), and money for cleaning the fish (if you want your fish filleted, etc. - this is completely optional).

If this is your first time on a party boat, other members will be happy to help you out. The deckhands will help you, too. No worries! Email me with any questions.  We had a ball last July on the Victory,  and caught tons of Barricuda and Rockfish, including some red snapper!

Any ?'s,  my # is[masked],  call me or text me if you would like,  and give me a call that morning if for some reason you are having a problem finding us.

So - are you in???

I know it is a bit of a late notice, but if you have any tendency to get sea sick, take something before you get on the boat! Dramamine is ok, but does cause drowsiness. I like Bonine myself, it is a chewable tablet that will keep your stomach ok all day. Also, don't get on the boat with an empty stomach! Getting on the boat like that might make you think you will be fine, but you need something in your stomach to settle the stomach acids. A piece of fruit, a protein bar, a breakfast sandwich, just something small makes all the difference. Don't think for sure that you will get seasick, this is a large boat which can take the swells, just be prepared...gonna be fun!

Fishing was terrific! Captain Mike and his crew were especially enthusiastic in helping everyone catch something. Bob & Henry were mainly helping us in the back and they were quick to lend a hand if something arose. And Bob is a great galley chef too! :) Everyone was friendly. Definitely would reconsider going back on a regular basis. :)

-Attendance issue- maybe someone should post the 'Flakes' names on this groups page to 'embarrass' them. - just an idea. I'm sure some of them had legitamate excusses. :)
-fishing- I'm glad you guys caught the 'skinnies'. What were they hitting on? jigs, bait? what kind of bait was there?
    -thank you, GM

Not here to embarrass anyone, I know some groups charge a fee for events and have it sent it thru paypal, but that is usually for camping trips and the like, if an organizer needs to purchase food or make camping reservations. Pre paying does cut down on the flake factor. I just wanna make sure we bring good sized crowds on the boat. Telling em we are bringing 30 and having 11 show up aint neat. If any of you canceled, don't worry about it, things come up...but ha ha ha, the fishing was great lol. Most cudas were caught on small chovies, pinheads, and thanks to Michael for supplying the small hooks! There were also a few live squid available...

I had an absolute blast yesterday. Sifu Terry (sifu = teacher), thanks again for organizing such a great meetup. You showed me yesterday with your fishing skills why I will always be the student & you the teacher. Thanks again, Steve and Marissa. My wife was so amazed at the large barracuda the I CAUGHT... hehe. Rest assured, it will be given an honorable death. My mother, brother, & wife got a portion. Please check out the pic I'm in the process of uploading.

Terrific! Excellent boat, captain, met new meetup members and solidified others, other fisherman were great, and caught a boatload of fish!

    July 7, 2013

  • Terry

Had a great time! We caught lots of barricuda, sand dabs and sculpin! I do think the captain was mildly disappointed that only about 11 of us from our group showed up though. Gonna prolly cross post this with the Energized outdoor group next time to get better attendance, I think we need better attendance to make sure we still get the group rate. Too many no shows and last minute cancellations like Vince said. Either way, ya'll missed out on a great time!

Oh Wendy, I won't get to meet you this weekend...wipes away tears...lol, hey, we'll fish some other time. If you ever want to plan a fishing trip in Ventura, either from the beach or on a boat, like Will said, go for it!

Terry... Will... it will be great to fish with you both again, my good friends. These are the days of high adventure!

Just one question, what bait should I bring? Squid? Or will this be provided by the boat? My goal is to catch any big fish with lots of meat to feed my pregnant wife.

    - Mike

    2 · July 4, 2013

    • Mary Jane C.

Your wifey is pregnant!! Congrats :) the boat will provide all the bait, hopefully live :) Graeme said they might have live squid

Thanks for rsvp'ing for me Mary! See u all next Saturday. Can anyone suggest a good setup for lingcod and what bait works best?

    1 · June 28, 2013

    • Mary Jane C.

Graeme, if you curse me, so help me!! Haha. I've never fished for Barracuda before, so this will be a new experience. My last 3/4th to Catalina trip I was being taught how to catch Calico bass, but only managed to land one (not legal) onto the boat. I spent last weekend learning how to cast on a conventional reel at Alondra. Let's hope it works (and I don't spend too much time birds nesting, fingers crossed). You should come!!!

      July 3, 2013

    • Mary Jane C.

One of the rods I borrowed has jerk bait on it.. and I've been told to try it. This will be at least amusing to see.

    July 3, 2013

The report shows lots of Barracuda, size 2/0 circle hook with steel leader will help you get these bad boys on the boat.

    July 3, 2013

  • James K.

I just RSVPed, can I bring a few friends? I didn't see the option for bringing guests.

It seems like a lot of people RSVP, what is the max this boat can take on the trip?

    June 30, 2013

    • James K.

Thanks! Will I need to bring a bucket to hold the fish and will there be ice to keep it fresh?

      July 1, 2013

    • Terry

There will be gunney sacks provided where you will place your fish during the day, they stay plenty fresh that way. You might want to keep a small ice chest in your car to take the fish home in...don't bring any buckets, it just adds clutter to the boat...

      July 2, 2013

  • Bobby M.

Should I call and pay in advance or pay on the day?

    July 2, 2013

    • Mary Jane C.

Box office opens at 5am, so I'm assuming Terry will want money in hand by 5am? Or whoever from our group is there.

      1 · July 2, 2013

    • Terry

yep, whoever from our group is first in line, gotta be cash

      July 2, 2013

  • Cynthia

Not coming, been sick = minus 3. So sad!!

    July 2, 2013

  • Terry

Ok, I called today, we will get on the boat for $45...and can fish near one another, most likely on the back of the boat...however...someone with the group, me, or Vince, or somebody, will need to be lined up early, and when you arrive, find us at the front of the line, and give us your $45 in cash, and we will pay for you when we get inside, and get you a spot on the boat by the group. Now, if you are paying by credit card, you better just get there early, and that way you will be by the front of the line. Tell em you are with the group (I may have some name tags for us) and they will prolly try to put you near other members on the boat...

    June 26, 2013

    • Terry

Stewart-did you get the $45 rate?

      June 26, 2013

    • Terry

by the way, when I call in the next day or two, i am going to let them know we have about 30 folks committed. Did the same thing last year, a few folks, as usual, pooped out at the last minute, and the boat was a bit crowded but not that bad, although it was just 3 days after the 4th, and on a non license day like this year...

      June 26, 2013

  • Terry

We got it, the discount! Here it is cut and pasted from my email:

Hi Don-we are bringing out our Souther Cal fishing meet up group on July 6th for our annual Victory trip. We usually get a group rate of $45 per angler, would it be possible to get that rate again? We are bring out 25-30 people. Do I need to call the landing to look into this?

yes, call[masked] for rservations and tell them Don said $45 rate was ok, they'll check with me.

    2 · June 26, 2013

    • Will

do we all need to RSVP or did you RSVP for the group

      June 26, 2013

Is this the same set up like fishing from the pier. Sorry I'm not a SALT guy.
Tackle: you only need to buy some 3-4oz torpedo sinkers and hooks - sizes 2 or 4. 12lb test line is good but I've used 8, 10, 20....

    June 24, 2013

my tip for the Barries- when they're not hitting the jigs (metal), they won't turn down a lively Anchovey or smaller Sardine with a light setup. (12 pd. line, little egg-sinker, for example)
Don't let them 'eat it' too long (approx.2 sec.)or else they might swallow the hook and you'll get cut off with their big teeth.- let me know if it works :)

I looked at the 3/4 fish count for Sat. I bet the Jackpot fish was probably a Sheephead or Barracuda. I read an article that said it's common now for deckhands not to give out jackpot $ to the winner. Is that true?

    June 16, 2013

    • OCVincent

I got the jackpot two weeks ago and tipped them 20% of it plus tipped on my galley tab. Got four half off vouchers for up to four people each voucher. Newport landing

I will call early next week to see about getting the $45 rate, and at that time will give them an approx. head count. I will also ask about putting us all in the same area on the boat. I don't remember if we can reserve a spot or we just need to get there early. I'll find out and let ya'll know...
