  • AUG Meetup: Full Stack .NET Development – A Peek into the Future

Overview for the session: Since its initial release in 2002, .NET Framework is the most important application development framework across all of Microsoft's operating system platforms, including all version of Windows for desktop, Server, Windows Phone, Xbox and Windows Embedded. During this past few years, as part of Microsoft's initiative to embrace open-source, .NET Core is one of the key components. In May this year, Microsoft made an announcement to introduce the next major release. After .NET Core 3.0, there will not be .NET Core 4. Instead, the next release will be .NET 5, and will be the only .NET going forward that support Windows, Linux, macOS, iOS, Android, tvOS, watchOS, WebAssembly and more. In April this year, .NET Framework 4.8 was released, which according to Microsoft, will be the last version of .NET Framework. What does all these changes mean to developers with vested interest in .NET? For this presentation, we will take a peek into .NET 's future, reflect on some of the legacy .NET and walk through some coding examples, starting with a legacy .NET environment, migrating the app with today's available resources and preparing for the future version of .NET. As part of the code walk through, we will touch on the following: • C#, SQL, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, SQL, IIS and security best practices. Bio: 20+ years in the technology field, with mix of experiences in embedded-hardware, embedded-OS, application-development, Information-Technology and Cybersecurity. Samuel has experience working with broad range of Microsoft operating system platforms and application development environments.

  • Docker and Azure Kubernetes Service for .NET Developers

Session description: Application containerization is becoming more and more popular and is critical for scalable and reliable applications. During the session, I will present what containers on the Docker platform are in a way understandable to the .NET developers. Participants will learn how to implement and run a simple ASP.NET Core application in a Docker container and how to use Microsoft Azure Kubernetes Service as a platform for automated scaling and managing containerized applications. I will present useful tools related to Docker and Kubernetes for the Visual Studio development environment. There will be additional materials shared which help starting journey with Azure Kubernetes Service. Speaker bio: Daniel Krzyczkowski Passionate about Microsoft technologies. • Build a chat bot using the Azure Bot Service with Hattan Shobokshi

Build a chat bot using the Azure Bot Service Would you like to build a chat bot targeting slack, facebook, sms and more? With a few lines of node code you can! In this presentation I'll show you how to easily build a bot. We'll start from scratch and build a bot that will pull data from an api as well as handle different inputs from a user. We'll also hook in natural language processing and add intelligence to the bot (No prior AI experience needed!) This will be a code heavy presentation using the Microsoft BotBuilder SDK. We'll also see how easy it is to host the bot on Azure, discuss conversational UX and design and learn to build a bot that can receive input from multi sources such as facebook, slack and more! About the Presenter: picture is of a younger Hattan :-) Hattan Shobokshi is a Senior Software Engineer @ Microsoft & Technical speaker. He is passionate about full stack web application development, DevOps and Kubernetes. Hattan has a fondness for writing CLI tools and improving automation workflows. He is Vice President of the Los Angeles .NET User group and a core organizer for SoCal Code Camp.

  • Full Stack IoT .NET Developer

For this meetup session, we will talk about the full stack IoT development environment, using .NET and Azure. Lacking a recognized term to express the development environment for this presentation, I borrowed the term “Full Stack Developer”, a trendy term that describes developer with multiple technical disciplines, as part of the title. To be effective in developing IoT solution, a developer is required to have multiple technical disciplines: • Ability to write codes in multiple programming languages (front-end, back-end, middle-ware, components & etc.) • Platforms knowledge (Communication protocol, OS & Network Infrastructure) In addition to the technical aspect, it’s necessary for the developer to know and understand the associated IoT environment’s business processes. Here’s a brief outline of the contents for this session: • Full stack development for IoT • The IoT development environment using .NET and Azure • Business consideration for IoT Solutions • Coding examples Speaker's Bio: 20+ years in the technology field, with mix of experiences in embedded-hardware, embedded-OS, application-development, Information-Technology, Cybersecurity and business management. Published two books on Windows CE, “Professional Microsoft Windows Embedded CE 6.0” in 2008 and “Professional Windows Embedded Compact 7” in 2011. http://embedded101.com/Blogs/samuelphung Twitter: @samuelp101 https://linkedin.com/in/samuelp101

  • "It’s 2018. Why aren’t you using Azure Search?" with Bryan Soltis

Open up your website. Click Search. Tell me, do you like what you see? Are you BLOWN AWAY at the functionality? Does it return the exact results you were looking for, and let you customize what you see? I’m betting that there’s more than a little room for improvement. Don’t worry, most people are in the same boat. What if I told you could build amazing search experiences with just a little bit of code – all backed by Microsoft’s Cloud? By implementing Azure Search into your sites, you can quickly provide result faceting, inline highlighting, synonym mapping, and even customized text analyzers. My name is Bryan Soltis and I’m a technical Evangelist and Kentico and Microsoft Azure MVP. In this session, I’m going to introduce you to this often-overlooked cousin of the Azure family and show you how to build some amazing search solutions. And maybe a few Simpsons quotes along the way…
