30 Nerds doing 30th on 30th while doing Nerdy Book Club

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children of all ages... for this month's nerdy book club extravaganza, it will be one to remember, mark my words, this is a book that will delight your mind and ravage your soul.  This will be the biggest, brightest, most interesting book club of all time or you can call me a monkey's uncle.  You are about to witness scenes both thrilling and dangerous. Never before has such tremendous talent been presented between two stupendous pieces of cardboard, or paper, or on a digital screen for all you crazy Nook/Kindle readers.  Exciting, terrifying, fantastic words are all on display before your very eyes.  From the far corners of your imagination, the Active Lifestyle Nerds takes much pride in presenting The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.

http://www.amazon.com/Night-Circus-Erin-Morgenstern/dp/0307744434

Amazon summary: "The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night. But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway: a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them both, this is a game in which only one can be left standing. Despite the high stakes, Celia and Marco soon tumble headfirst into love, setting off a domino effect of dangerous consequences, and leaving the lives of everyone, from the performers to the patrons, hanging in the balance."

Join me and your fellow nerdy book readers for a night of treats and drinks at South Park/North Park's 30th on 30th.  We will roam from location to location with a topic of discussion at each eatery/drinkery.  We'll start in South Park for two or three bites or sips, but be prepared to get back in your car because ain't no way we are walking to North Park.  I will assign you all something to chew on mentally while we travel to our next destination.  We will then rendezvous at the Linkery before heading further north.   Wherein, I hope we end up at Heaven Sent for a final sweet delicacy to leave us with a smile on our face.

This will probably take around 3 hours, rather than 2 like normal.  You all know you can come and go as you need, I will update as to our current location.  Also, remember, you do not have to have read the book to attend, but I would very much prefer if you did for this one.

If you are up for this challenge, please RSVP as soon as possible.  I am limiting the number of this meetup, well, because I can, but, more importantly because 40 people last time was kind of tough to coordinate for 30th on 30th.  That's not to say that anyone who doesn't RSVP shouldn't go to 30th on 30th because it is just awesome.  So please join us out there and say hello.  I doubt I'll have 30 for book club, but you nerds never cease to amaze me.

Happy reading and see you soon!

Sorry, was a a little too, um, lacking in the mental faculties after the game to drive down immediately. Got there at around 7 and walked about on my own.

Thanks everyone for coming out. I had so much fun. Great discussions with all of you on and off topic! I hope you all had a good time and I hope you like my neighborhood. I personally enjoyed many of the treats and drinks. I don't know about that shot though... Still tasting that one, even after dessert. Hope to see you all again soon. Cheers!

P.S. - Remember to bring cash if you want to partake of the tasty treats. Go to http://30thstreet.org/30th-on-30th/ to see what the tentative menu is.

So here's the plan and then discussion topics to follow: We'll hit up a couple places in south park with a discussion topic at each stop. Then we'll pack up and move north when folks are ready. Stops in South Park are the Station and Vagabond. Stops in North Park will be the Linkery, Urban Solace, Sipz/El Take it Easy, and finally stopping at Heaven Sent Deserts.

      4. Immortality: The book gives a picture of what happens to those that may live beyond what a typical life cycle looks like. Plenty of areas of pop culture have also dealt with the question. How many of you have thought about immortality, and would you want to join the circus in order to be immortal? What would you do to attain immortality? Or would you not want immortality?
      5. So, I asked for a romance fantasy suggestion for this month’s book club book… How do you all feel about the romance here? How do you like your romance literature in general? Are you in favor of books like this; or are you more inclined to read something like Game of Thrones or the Sookie Stackhouse (True Blood) books? What are some of your favorite romances in literature and movies?

      6. Have any of you been to the circus? What have you loved about it? Been terrified? I don’t know about the rest of you but after Stephen King’s It I can’t spend a lot time with clowns. Though, Cirque de Soleil does a pretty good job with its clowns. Did everyone love the idea of Le Cirque des Reves as much as I did?

Placing myself on the wait list just in case (a) I am actually able to attend, which is looking like it now, and (b) there is a last moment back out.

Crap. Won't be able to make it after all.

    June 7, 2013

  • Rebecca

Since there will be no GoT to watch I better start reading again. This sounds fun!
