Meeting for Orangewood Children's Home Volunteer Program (Anaheim)
Hi. If you are using the Meetup mobile app on your phone, look down a few lines below and tap the red-colored "Read more" to expand the description. TAP THIS --------- If you are using a computer or laptop/notebook, then you should be fine. Okay, everybody should now be able to see the full description on their screen. Reminder for everyone: If Meetup sends too many emails, then look at the bottom of their email and click Unsubscribe or Manage your settings or account page. Recommended for anyone new to this group or volunteering for the first time: ____________________________________________ This is a meeting to learn & hear about Orangewood Children's Home (aka Children & Family Center) and also other children-related programs in Orange County. This is not a volunteer event. No kids/children will be at this meeting...just adults. Attention: A group member recently went, and said the room they normally meet in was locked or unavailable, and many of the regular speakers from different organizations didn't attend. Maybe it had something to do with Memorial Day holiday or maybe some of them were unavailable due to summer vacation. Regardless, I don't want anyone to have a negative or disappointing experience. If anyone plans on going to this meeting, please feel free to contact them to confirm it's really happening this month. Contact info (email & phone #) is provided in the section below. Thank you. "...Orangewood Children's Home [aka Orangewood Children and Family Center] is Orange County's only emergency shelter for neglected and sexually, physically or emotionally abused children. The Home provides refuge each year for over 1,000 children who have been removed from their caretakers by police officers or child protective services workers and placed into protective custody." To become a volunteer for Orangewood Children's Home, attend one of these meetings, fill out their application form, submit references, complete and pass their Dept. of Justice live scan background check, and after being accepted into their volunteer program, you should be welcome to visit the kids at the shelter. Volunteers can choose when to participate (weeknights, weekends, etc.) and how frequently (or infrequently). You can decide when and how often you want to help. It's flexible and convenient for anyone with a busy schedule. If anybody ever wants to volunteer together as a small group, just let me know. Here are examples - ____________________________________________ Info on the orientation meeting can be found at ( The address appears to be: 2125 E. Katella Ave, Anaheim, 92806 ...but please contact one of the following to confirm the location/address: Jane Dawson - [masked] - (714)[masked] Cheryl Alexander - [masked] - (714)[masked] or Chris Avventino - (714)[masked] ***Scroll to the bottom for driving directions*** ____________________________________________ During this meeting, attendees will hear & learn about: Orangewood Children's Home ( CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) ( CAST (Child Abuse Services Team) ( This meeting is an introduction to various programs. There is no obligation or pressure to join or commit to anything. A meeting should occur on the last Tuesday of every month (except December) from 6:00 - 7:30pm or so. If anything (e.g. traffic, work, etc.) prevents you from arriving at 6:00pm, that's okay. It's a casual meeting, and they understand if people arrive late or leave early. Feel free to arrive or leave whenever. Water and snacks are sometimes provided. _________________________________________________ One aspect of the volunteer program for Orangewood Children's Home is its flexibility. Volunteers set their own schedule and can participate as much (or as little) as they want. This can be advantageous for those with really busy schedules. However, if anyone has time to make a long-term commitment and wants to make more of an impact & influence, in addition to CASA ( and CAST, ( mentoring programs also need volunteers to be a positive role model: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County ( Orangewood Foundation ( Orangewood Children's Foundation is related, but technically different and separate from the Orangewood Children's Home volunteer program. If anyone wants to help with the Foundation, they have a separate meeting. Info on their volunteer information session - ____________________________________________ A few people have either been told a different address or gotten lost, so hopefully the following will help. The address should be 2125 East Katella Ave, Anaheim, 92806 It's near Angel's Stadium, on Katella Ave, between State College Blvd and the 57 freeway (and not far from the 5 freeway). On Katella Ave, look for a white building with tinted/reflective windows: Parking should be available and free (spots that say 2 Hour Visitor Parking or their parking garage). If a security guard is there to prevent people from parking for special events such as Angels baseball games, just tell him/her you are there for the volunteer meeting and you should be allowed to park there. After parking, walk toward the building. After entering the front door, turn right. The meeting is in the room on the right. Water and snacks are usually provided. If the bathroom at the SSA building is locked, "next door" (walking distance) is Panda Express, Togos Sandwiches, Starbucks, Carl's Jr., Baskin Robbins, and a Mexican food place) (,-117.8869822,3a,75y,314.9h,89.55t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sZODM-LVmtqjmGGj0auwm9w!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!6m1!1e1), so if anyone needs to use a restroom or eat dinner, consider going there before or after the meeting. Thank you.

Excerpts by JFK:

"Never before has man had such a great capacity to control his own environment, to end hunger, poverty and disease, to banish illiteracy and human misery. We have the power to make the best generation of mankind in the history of the world."

"We dare not forget today that we are the heirs of that first revolution. Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans—born in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage—and unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this Nation has always been committed, and to which we are committed today at home and around the world."

"My fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country."

"Finally, whether you are citizens of America or citizens of the world, ask of us the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you. With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God's work must truly be our own."

— John F. Kennedy
