The YMCA of Orange County used to have "Fundays" for foster kids.
Unfortunately, the YMCA of OC ended their mentoring program in 2014 (maybe due to financial reasons).
Anyhow, another agency, Foster Care Auxiliary will try to continue the program.
Some examples of activities/events done in the past include: movies, Angels baseball games, Ducks hockey games, amusement parks, museums, aquariums, whale watching, ice skating, bowling, miniature golf, zoo, etc...
Volunteers are usually assigned to a few kids and in small groups, interact with one another and participate in the activity/event together.
The role is more than being a chaperone. Volunteers talk with the kids like a mentor, become a positive role model, and are like a "big brother" or "big sister" to them.
This month's event is:
a holiday party "with craft tables, games, lunch, gifts and Santa."
This was the description from YMCA:
"Foster children have the same needs as other children – and a few extra. All children need love and affection. They need security in family life and the privilege of being respected as a person. They need the wise, friendly understanding of warm-hearted adults. These are the things that you as a volunteer can give to a foster child who has not experienced this in their home."
"Community volunteers provide hundreds of at-risk youth with fun activities and outings at monthly FUNDAYS, while providing a much needed break for the foster parents. For these children and families, our volunteers are our FACES of HOPE, providing role models and the support they need to overcome their abusive past."
"The nature of these events is to offer our children a mentor for the day."
If interested in volunteering, email Christina to express your interest and she can provide more instructions on how to proceed - [masked]
