  • Festival of Lights @ Van Dusen Gardens (Shaugnessy)
It's that time of year again! I stepped up to organize this group six years ago (yes, time flies) for the sole reason that I wanted to go to this event, and not go alone... so the holiday season is not complete for me without a Social Butterflies trip to the Festival of Lights at Van Dusen Gardens. It's a fabulous opportunity to get into the holiday spirit with millions of sparkling lights (literally), and delicious holiday treats and hot beverages to keep us warm as we wind our way through the winter wonderland. Before you leave, don't forget to check out the unique and fabulous shopping in the Gardens Gift Shop. I will email out my cell phone number to all "yes" RSVP's the day before the event, so you can reach me in case you have trouble finding the group. All information below is taken from the Festival of Lights web page, and please note that you will purchase your own ticket, in advance is highly recommended. This event is also fun in snow & rain, so I plan to be there regardless of the weather. ----------------------------------------- Festival of Lights at VanDusen Botanical Garden During December, VanDusen Botanical Garden is decorated with hundreds of thousands of lights for the Festival of Lights. • Half-price Dinner @ Pacific Institute for Culinary Arts (Granville Island)
Pre-Payment is REQUIRED for this event. **RSVPs are now open, and your pre-payment will guarantee your spot. Since I have to guarantee the reservation with my personal credit card, you MUST pay in advance.** I choose to use PayPal to avoid the lengthy emailing back-and-forth that goes into arranging payment for this event any other way. You can also pay by email money transfer - just message me and I'll send you my email address. I have eaten at this restaurant with Social Butterflies more than a dozen times, and the quality of the food and presentation is outstanding. On Mondays through Thursdays, their three-course prix-fixe menu is only $26, and with tax & gratuity makes it $32 all-in (beverages extra). If you do not order beverages, then you will be completely pre-paid for this event - which will feel nice when the date rolls around, and you don't have to budget for your mini-break ;) WHAT A GOOD DEAL. The food is magnificent. I cannot say enough good things about how tasty it always is. We often split a bottle of wine between 4 - 6 people, and with the half-off feature it is guaranteed to be a super-cheap and DELICIOUS meal. As with most prix-fixe menus, there are three options for appetizer, three for entree, and three for dessert. There are windows to watch the students in the kitchen preparing the luscious desserts, which is lots of fun in itself. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In order to make a reservation at this restaurant, I have to guarantee it with my personal credit card, and if someone doesn't show up, we have to pay for their food anyway. Therefore, I will be collecting $32 per person prior to the event (via PayPal or email money transfer). Then you'll only have to pay for your beverages, if you order any, and those will come on your own separate bill. It is very complicated otherwise, so this is the way it works best for us and saves oodles of time when it comes time to settle the bills. If you pre-pay and then have to change your RSVP to "not going," I will refund your payment as soon as I receive payment from another member who is taking your spot. Receipt of your payment confirms your spot. In other words, once I receive your payment, your RSVP "I'm going" will remain "I'm going." Until you have paid, it might be changed to "not going" if someone else pays before you. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I schedule this event frequently, so you will have other opportunities if you aren't sure you can make it this time. Parking is free in the garage under the restaurant, and the location is transit-friendly (just at the entrance to Granville Island). The menu changes every week and there is always a vegetarian option on request, but feel free to check out the current offerings on their web site: Click here for Sample Menus (http://www.bistro101.com/menu.html) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ About the Restaurant: Experience fine cuisine, prepared by tomorrow's great chefs: Bistro 101 at Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts was founded to create a 'real-world' training experience for the school’s professional Culinary and Baking & Pastry Arts students. Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts was the first private training facility in Canada with a fine dining restaurant on the premises. Students in our Culinary Arts program operate the restaurant for the final portion of their training. "Real-world" experience ensures our students are prepared for placement in top restaurants and hotels worldwide. Under the direction of our Chef Instructors, students design and prepare a three-course menu weekly. To master all aspects of restaurant organization, our Restaurant Instructors guide students through formal guest service. Our menus change weekly so that we are able to offer our guests a constant source of the freshest quality foods available, as well as a variety of seasonal choices. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Please note additional optional "event fee"/donation of a loonie per person, to help cover the meetup web site costs (a 1-month term as organizer costs me $19, and while I am willing to foot the bill, I would like to offset some of the cost). You can pay this in advance via PayPal if you would like. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  • TUTS - Legally Blonde
Theatre Under the Stars is presenting a fun performance of Legally Blonde at Malkin Bowl in the heart of Stanley Park. Let's buy cheap tickets and spread our blankets out on the grassy hill so we can all sit together. We'll meet in front of the box office at 6:30 and head in as a group to find the best spot on the hill. There are food venders inside the venue (with surprisingly nutritious options!) for those who wish to have a picnic dinner. The cheap tickets are $29. Over half of these have already been sold for this performance. You can buy your tickets in advance at TUTS.ca or at the box office on the night of the event (assuming they're not sold out). Bring a blanket plus some warm layers of clothing. It gets quite cool in the park after the sun goes down. Keep your fingers crossed for a nice day!

  • Girls' Night Out 4 for $40 @ Milestones (Cambie)
It's time for Girls' Night Out on a Monday - and now the weather should be nice enough to sit out on the patio! Take advantage of a great deal on bellinis and appies: 4 bellinis and 4 appies for $40 (we generally split up and order 1 or 2 each, but you are free to order whatever you like if you don't want to do the special). http://www.milestonesrestaurants.com/girls_night_out.php This is a gorgeous newer Milestones location on Cambie just off West Broadway, and we've got either the patio (nice weather) or the tables in the lounge by the windows reserved (not nice weather), for a magnificent view of downtown and the mountains. This location is also very transit-friendly, and on-site parking is $6 after 6pm. We'll have a shiny new restaurant and a gorgeous view of downtown to enjoy, along with our scrumptious bellinis and appies :)
