I hope you are all keeping safe and healthy this winter. A lot has happened since May and our hearts go out to those of you who work in medical professions and other essential positions who have been on the front lines since March. That said, in the interim, we made a group on Chess.com and we are looking to host Zoom calls with 5 minute chess matches online so we can get our chess fixes this winter. Update from Alaric (5/24/2020)
As the Bay Area slowly reopens thanks to the heroic efforts of our health professionals and essential workers, it is with a heavy heart that I share the news that the place we called home—the Crepe House in the Mission—will no longer continue to operate. All across the Bay Area and around the country, local businesses have been forced to close because of this pandemic, and, unfortunately, it has reached into the establishment that has so graciously provided us with a place to play chess, drink coffee, and enjoy crepes for over five years. I am sure that all of us will keenly feel the absence of the Crepe House in the months to come and we wish the staff all the best for the future.
Robert and I are currently in the search for a new venue. If anyone has any suggestions for a chess-friendly cafe or restaurant, please feel free to share them with us. Thank you for your patience and stay well.
Come for the chess; stay for the fun people and conversations, good food, beer and wine. Ideal players are adults who know at least the basic rules, but don't have to take the game too seriously. You should have a very relaxed attitude about winning/losing. Just for fun, fun, fun, and the chance to learn and/or stay in practice.
If you have a chess set (board and pieces) and/or a chess clock, it'd be helpful if you bring it. But if you don't, that's fine too. (After all, only half the players need to bring a set!)
