Old Rag Mountain - Early Hike!

  • Forest Glen Metro Station

  • Old Rag Mountain in Shenandoah National Park is one of the most beautiful and popular hikes in the mid-Atlantic region. With many spectacular panoramic views, and one of the most challenging rock scrambles in the park, this circuit hike is a favorite of many hikers.

We'll meet for carpooling at either the Forest Glen metro station at 5:20 am, or the Vienna Metro Station at 6 am.  We should arrive at the Old Rag parking lot around 7:30 am, hike up, have lunch at the summit and enjoy the view, then walk back down, getting back to the cars around 1 pm, and back to Vienna around 2:30 pm, or Forest Glen at 3 pm.

This is NOT a hike for beginners--only intermediate and advanced. The hike is approximately 8.5 miles long, with a 2500 foot climb.  We'll go up steep switch backs then transition to a rock scramble with narrow crevices to the summit.  We'll rest at the top, then descend a stepped trail down to the fire road.  The entire hike should take about 5 to 6 hours.

    And now the disclaimer:

You must hike at your own risk. The trail is steep and rocky.  Many hikers successfully climb it each year without incident, but some injuries do occur.  If you own hiking boots, can do the Billy Goat A trail, and are comfortable with the idea of pushing your heart rate to[masked] beats per minute for over an hour, then you can do this hike.  It is ultimately up to you to know your limits and keep yourself safe.

We'll be doing this event with our sister group Social DC.

If you are up for the challenge, I hope you can join us!

I see essentially zero chance the park is going to reopen by Saturday, so I'm going to cancel this one. Sorry!

FYI, AFAIK, Shenandoah National Park, including Old Rag, is currently closed. That might affect our hike if it continues through the weekend...
