Help a local Alpaca Farm on Shearing Day

  • Apr 20, 2013 · 9:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Come on out and help volunteer at the Houchin Family Alpaca Farm. Brian and Karley Houchin are excited and happy to show us how they work their farm. We will help assist them in vacuuming or blowing out fleece on alpacas. Getting animals to and up on shearing table. Take turns in helping hold the animal. Collecting and bagging of fleece while Brian shears the alpaca. I am limiting this event to 12 people. I will need 6 people to sign up for 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. and 6 to sign up for 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. At the time of signing up add your comment as to which time you can come. If you see 6 people have sign up for the 9 o'clock spot then you should sign up for the 11 o'clock slot. We will have two rain dates as alternate dates. May 4th and May 11th in the event of rain. I will update this event as Brian notifies me as to the what day will work best. So please watch this event closer to the date as it might possibly change. This is a farm environment so please dress appropriately. Jeans, gloves if you feel you might need them, long sleeved shirt, dress in layers, boots or durable shoes that may get dirty. Please bring yourself a snack and beverage. This event should be a lot of fun and a learning experience for us all..so please join in. Thanks! ~Mike :)

Thanks for helping out. We were able to have some fun and learn something new. We may have some celebrities in the future, since the local Pantagraph came out to visit. :) Also, for those of you that brought nice cameras and took pics.. please post them on here. Thanks much!

It's a great experience with Houchin Family Alpacas and the Social & Service Peoria group! Nikki, one of the Alpaca, was my favorite and gave me a memorable experience. I would love to come back here again. Thanks Mike for organizing this event. :)

The Houchin Family sent me an email saying so far it's a Go for Saturday. They plan to have water and lemonade. Some gondolas for lunch. He asked that you wear old work clothes and shoes or boots. We will be on concrete so your feet shouldn't get muddy. He also mentioned that in appreciation of our group coming out and helping they will offer a 25% discount off any of their alpaca items in stock. They don't expect anyone to buy anything but wanted to make the offer known. P.S. Please still check Friday evening (9pm) on our post section here for any updates. Happy days! ~Mike :)

Hello everyone. Mike here. Looking forward to this event and want to thank those of you that have signed up. It should be fun. :) Also note that I would like you to check back on the post section here in case we would have to cancel if it ends up raining on Saturday. I will get a call from Brian Houchin this Friday and will have a last minute post that evening around 9 pm if it is still a go. So please check here Friday evening. Also, since this is a volunteer event, please make every effort to show. The Houchin Family is counting on us and happy that we will be lending a hand. They will be providing a snack and a drink for us, but please bring yourself something just in case. Thanks again and see you there. ~Mike :)

A bit far for me to drive...and I drive to Bloomington from Peoria every day so one more day would just be too much. Great idea for an activity though!
