  • FREE Live Music Harborwalk Sounds: Them Fantasies

    The Institute of Contemporary Art

I will meet everyone at the ICA at 6pm which is when the music will start. I'll be to the right of the stage. I will NOT be checking my phone so come early. I will describe what I have on that day. Grab a drink, soak up the summer sun, and hear some of Boston’s best up-and-coming musicians as the sun sets and sail boats drift on the harbor in the background. This weeks Talent: Them Fantasies is a Boston indie rock trio founded by Dominic Cannarella and Eric McCoy and joined by Steven Velasquez. They will get you on your feet and remind you of your long-lost love all at the same time. Listen to them here: https://youtu.be/UF-v93SPpqw The ICA is free and open until 9PM so people can go up to the galleries together after the performance. Hungry? The restaurants near by include Strega and Empire.

  • Creative Writers Harvard Square

    Smith Campus Center

If your writing sounds good aloud then it will have some great strong points. So we read aloud at times. (As you write you'd best imagine an audience). And make sure when you read aloud you get the true feedback you need, too. (You'll see how: read on). Calling all word tinkers..! & scribblers. Fetch a coffee/ snack should you wish & bring it on up. Laptops are fine of course however paper & pencil preferred (you'll see why when you read on). We begin by socializing, introducing ourselves, saying something about what attracts us to writing & our style, focus, or purpose. THEN, if for some unlikely reason it is too loud in this area, we'll move to another quieter place in this vast Smith Campus Center, which is open to the public. Although there is NO rule to keep quiet anywhere in this venue, we'll keep our voices down should that be opportunely. We'll send around a list of these prompts and majority vote (confidential using check marks) we will announce only them. FLASH PROMPTS-- Prompts are designed to be used anywhere while doing this writing exercise (if included in your writing at all) but best would be if used as the last line. Check off the prompts you want to write to. ADD any prompts YOU bring to be voted on we'll add them to the list--THAT'S REQUESTED! "joy is constantly waiting to unfurl, if only we realized it" (Ionesco, The Hermit). Is writing an excuse to avoid real life, or is it a fusion & reconciliation with the past, or is it the endeavor to focus ourselves spiritually on our making everything of the present moment's potential richness. SELF - SEARCHING prompts using your experience (what other is there in life except what you know-- your experience?) --we'll pass around this prompts list you are encouraged to add to= why hide it? ...secrecy is our bane when we are trying to expose art, creativity and life. "Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's audacity". (Anais Nin) "whenever you do something that is not aligned with the yearning of the soul you create suffering". (Anais Nin) "Each friend represents a world within us and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born" (Anais Nin) "Now! It is the only time we have in our power" (Leo Tolstoy) "Hesitation kills more dreams than failure ever will" (Suzy Kassem) "What screws us up most in life is the picture in our head of how it is supposed to be" ("Rolling Stones") "I got crows at my window, dogs at my door/ I don't think I can take any more" (Paul McCartney, "I don't Know" song)... “Above all, don't lie to yourself. The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to a point that he cannot distinguish the truth within him" (Dostoyevski) And you add to the list!! and then we vote on which prompt we use... "Flow" is the writer's aim, however you're encouraged to avoid torrents of writing & keep within a long paragraph or two shorter ones so we'll limit to about 10 minutes time to write per prompt. We won't care about grammar or syntax just follow your pen & visualize what you are trying to write as you do that or read aloud. As you write or read, feel what you are writing as if spoken. That will bring natural intonation & rhythm. COLLECTIVE CRITIQUE-- put your writing in the center of the table and we'll shuffle then randomly distribute them to others for their feedback. Put a name on it so we can return it to you. CONSTRUCTIVE OK otherwise avoid negative comments. WE WILL SHARE-- at the end choose what you consider to be ONLY the favorite of what you wrote (you must choose--) and read it out loud.
