Social Fun meets Social Cause...
Join Team Social Fun on Sunday,
May 5, 2013 for The Walk for Hunger!
Rain or Shine.
The Walk for Hunger is an annual tradition and a rite of spring in Massachusetts! Join a community of over 40,000 caring friends
and neighbors, and raise money for those struggling to make
Walkers are invited to walk all or just part of the 20-mile route.
There is no required registration fee and no fundraising minimum, but all Walkers and Volunteers are encouraged to raise as much
as they can to help our neighbors in need.
The money raised through The Walk for Hunger will help Project Bread fund hunger relief and prevention through 450 emergency programs, schools, community health centers, farmers’ markets, community suppers, home care organizations, and other programs that protect the individual and strengthen our community’s food security. Last year alone, Project Bread was able to provide 65.2 million meals to hungry people in the Boston area.
We raised $2,000 last year. This year our goal is $1500. Can we do it again? Absolutely!!!!
You have until Monday April 15, to register as anything after that it will be too late to get to your goal. Serious participants only as this is a 20 mile walk. If you decide to join our team, you are also saying that you will register with us as a team and not do the walk on your own.
Here's what you need to know to participate with our team.
We will meet at 8am at the Subway Restaurant across the street from the park Street T Stop and walk over/register as a group. If you register on your own on that day, you will NOT be allowed to walk with us as a group. We register as a group for a reason, so the WFH can tally our totals altogether for an accurate money count. T subway is free to Walkers but you have to show proof- your on-line registration-so print it out and bring it along. You will have to pay for parking at the local train stations, so I encourage carpooling to the train station and split the parking fee which is usually $5.00 Walk is rain or shine and please DON’T BE A NO SHOW over something lame like weather or the perfect excuse 'I forgot'.
What to bring/wear
I would treat this like this you were going hiking for the day. Wear comfortable gym attire /loose clothing. Dress in layers because it can get hot if the sun comes out. Wear
workout sneakers or hiking/walking shoes. Socks are VERY IMPORTANT. You want to change them at every checkpoint if you can since it’s like getting new feet. I would bring 9-10 pairs of socks as well as bandages in case you develop sores. Bring a rain poncho in case it starts to rain. You can get a inexpensive one at Walmart in the sporting goods/camping section. I would also bring wipes for the porto potties as well as hand santizer. Like the boy scouts it’s best to ‘be prepared’. I would bring one backpack and keep everything in that and it keeps your hands free.
We are walking as a group but you can go at your own pace. It’s not a race/running event.
The walk usually takes about 8 hours. We usually start at 8:30am after registration and end about 4ish. If you get tired, there are buses that will bring you back to Boston starting at mile 3. But with all the chatting going on in our group, the time will fly and you won’t notice it. I also suggest ipods as well to keep the beat going.
Bring whatever you like to eat. Lunch will be given at the hallway point but it’s usually chips, granola bars, grape soda and fruit. Walking through Newton, there are pizza places that most folks stop at for a slice then take it with them as we keep ongoing. We get ice cream at the end of the walk and afterwards, all of us may go and get something to eat locally nearby.
It is important to be and stay hydrated through out the day. They give us water at each checkpoint but I also bring my own either through a container or bottled. If you are a hiker,
like I am, I have a small water backpack that fits into my regular backpack or smaller bottles.
How much do I have to raise?
I am setting our goal as a team to raise $[masked], which I think is very do-able. In 2012, we raised[masked], so I think this can be done. Keep it real and ask family, friends and co-workers.
If everyone gave $5 (which is a fast food meal) we would make our goal and maybe
