This Weeks Podcast

Jonathan Knight - Rock You

We have an exciting podcast for you this week. Jonathan Knight of RockYou joined us to talk about Zoo World 2, the sequel to their popular animal-centric zoo management game. We cover the updates to both the aesthetics and the mechanics. Jonathan also gives us a glimpse of RockYou’s perspective on competitive social games and how 3 Blokes studios fits into that. He’s a gamer himself with a diverse palate, but he zeroes in on some of his favorite types of games and how those inform features he wants to see develop in social games.

Last Weeks Highlights

Did the Pot Just Sue the Kettle? - Zynga, who’s been accused of heavily cloning other people’s games in its infancy, just sued Vostu for copying the Zynga catalogue. Is this a case of hypocrisy in a wild west full of copycats or has Vostu crossed a new line? After looking at the evidence presented in Zynga’s complaint, it looks like the Brazilian game publisher has taken the line “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery” to a whole new level.

My Country Delivers a Richer City Building Experience - City building games are one of the more popular types on Facebook, with titles such as Cityville and Millionaire City attracting hundreds of thousands of fans. But none of them have the kind of detail I remember from playing the city building classic, Sim City, way back in the day. If you also feel like city building games on Facebook are leaving out the kind of deep management style you crave, My Country might be for you.

Planet Domo Comes to Facebook - You may have seen a strange brown doll-like creature around the interwebs with black eyes and a mouth that seems lock-jawed open. This character, Domo, started out as a mascot for a Japanese TV station, but has since attracted a cult following. He’s particularly popular among the early teen crowd, and it seems that this is the audience intended for Planet Domo, a Facebook game that has gathered impressive momentum in the first few weeks of its release.

Risk Factions Trailer Makes a Nod to Starcraft II - A new trailer for Risk Factions will be a bit of a chuckle for fans of StarCraft II. In a scene produced by Powerhouse Animation Studios, EA/Playfish parodies the Blizzard’s popular trailer by retrofitting a donkey for war in a sci-fi garage.
