Socializing with Autism Group - SWAG! Teens, tweens, and young adults are insane, no really, they are dealing with raging hormones and a less than functional pre-frontal cortex! Our kids on the spectrum have unique experiences, trials, and issues but they still like to have fun! Many teens on the spectrum feel isolated at school and social events. Let's get our young people together for affordable and fun activities designed for teens ages 14 -18 on the autism spectrum. We plan to take them to games, shopping, movies, etc., to promote proper social skills and appropriate behavior while we hang out! Additionally, the parents can get together and discuss issues pertinent to our community and our children. SWAG is a group designed for parents to share experiences, to get information and advice, for our kids to make friends and, in some cases for us to campaign for better services and provision for our teens. Our goal is that SWAG is to be driven by the group. Ideas are always welcome!
We are located in the southern sector of Dallas, all are welcome but we are most interested in teenagers from Oak Cliff, Desoto, Duncanville, Lancaster, and Cedar Hill. We want the members to form bonds with kids in their own neighborhoods. Verbal, high-functioning, semi-verbal, or non-verbal or anything in between are all welcome. I had to mention this but in general labels are limiting! We want to promote inclusivity and compassion among our kids.
