What we're about

We are the Southern Idaho Chapter of the Soka Gakkai International, (SGI-USA) a Buddhist lay organization that promotes world peace and individual happiness based on the teachings of the Nichiren school of Mahayana Buddhism. This modern form of Buddhism is a practical philosophy of individual empowerment and inner transformation that enables people to develop themselves and take responsibility for their lives. The SGI USA is affiliated with the worldwide SGI organization that has more than 12 million members in more than 192 countries, with its headquarters in Tokyo, Japan.

The SGI - USA Idaho, has been active in the Treasure Valley since 1971. The SGI Southern Idaho is composed of about 22 families located throughout the Treasure Valley. Currently we hold monthly world peace prayer meetings in Meridian, Idaho at The Hampton and Suites, monthly Buddhist study meetings, Introduction to Buddhism meetings and monthly neighborhood discussion groups that are open to everyone, free of charge.

We study the teachings of

Nichiren (http://www.sgi.org/about-us/buddhist-lineage/nichiren.html) Daishonin and believe that the development of peace, culture and education are essential to building a better world. The SGI members base their practice on the teachings of the Lotus Sutra (http://www.sgi.org/about-us/buddhist-lineage/lotus-sutra.html) , widely regarded as one of the most important and influential scriptures of Buddhism. Its key message is that Buddhahood--a condition of absolute happiness, freedom from fear and from all illusions--is inherent in all life. The development of this inner life state enables all people to overcome their problems and live a fulfilled and active life, fully engaged with others and with society.

The Lotus Sutra is also unique among the teachings of Shakyamuni (http://www.sgi.org/about-us/buddhist-lineage/shakyamuni.html) in that it makes the attainment of enlightenment a possibility open to all people, without distinction based on gender, race, social standing or education. In this way, it is seen to be a full expression of Shakyamuni's compassionate intention of opening the way to enlightenment to all people.

At our monthly discussion meetings, held in members homes, we chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo (http://www.sgi.org/about-us/nam-myoho-renge-kyo.html) - the title of the Lotus Sutra-, share experiences, study Buddhism and encourage one another.

Come join us and learn more about this modern form of Buddhism and how to chant to change your life and your environment for the better. Keep in touch with SGI Idaho activities--like us on Facebook at SGI USA Idaho: https://www.facebook.com/SGI-USA-IDAHO-116921492591/
