The Salsa On2, also known as New York style, is a fun Latin mix of various dance styles that start with Salsa On2 and include a little bit of Bachata, Merengue and Cha-Cha.
At Sol Dance Center we teach Salsa On2 in group or private classes. To further accommodate students of all levels, we offer 4 different classes: beginners, advanced-beginners, intermediate and performance.
Sometimes referred to as Mambo, the New York style Salsa On2 dominates the Mambo and Salsa competitions, although those styles are gaining respect as well. Our classes focus on musicality, shines (open fancy footwork away from your partner), leading and following, step patterns, partnering skills and on increasing the fun of social dancing.
You do not need a partner to join the classes. Students rotate partners, improving their ability to adapt to different levels of dancing style and experience. It also develops the dancers’ leading/following skills.
Our Salsa On2 group classes are 2 hours long. The first hour consists of shines and the second hour focuses on dynamic turn patterns for all levels (beginner, intermediate or advanced). The classes teach leading/following techniques, improved partners’ connection, styling tips for men and women, Salsa timing and spinning. The classes also develop your own individual style on the dance floor.
The Salsa On2 is mid-to-up-tempo salsa, with an emphasis on percussion and band orchestration rather than on vocals. It differs slightly from traditional salsa, known as Salsa On1, mainly by its timing which emphasizes the conga drums beat and encourages the dancer to listen to percussive elements of the music. It tends to place a greater emphasis on performing “shines”, where dancers separate and dance solo for a time.
