Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (1948) Discuss and Socialize
Cary Grant and Myrna Loy share perfect chemistry in their third and final film together as they trade in city life for the "bliss" of country life. To add spice to the stew, Melvyn Douglas plays the perfect foil. A charming, nearly 200-year old Connecticut farmhouse seems like the perfect solution to their cramped New York apartment. But the Blandings quickly learn their new house, and 35 acres of solitude, is rapidly turning into a money pit as the structurally unsound home must be torn down and rebuilt. Myrna Loy stands out as, Muriel, the wife of a harried advertising executive, portrayed perfectly by Cary Grant with his comical facial expressions and grand gestures. Construction costs rise as Muriel makes some "small" changes to the new home's design, along with a litany of unforeseen construction troubles and setbacks, including digging a new well, delaying their move-in date. The Connecticut countryside portrayed in the movie was actually filmed in Malibu Creek State Park, California. The house built for the 1948 film still stands on the old Fox Ranch property in the park in the hills a few miles north of Malibu. The house is currently used as an office for the Park.
