Barnabe Peak Loop -Extended Version (Moderate+) 9 miles 1300 feet

  • Oct 21, 2013 · 9:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

It is a new 9 mile loop with a significant altitude gain of 1300 feet. This is the best hike in the S. Taylor State Park in our opionion.  We do a 6 mile version monthly but we are going to change that up this month.  We will start by heading down the road to cross a bridge over into Samuel P Taylor campground where there are clean restrooms for us all to use!  After that we will saunter along the nice bike/exercise path through the campground and further east. After about a mile we will run into the fire road that goes gently up the east flank of Barnabe Mountain.  Most of us Barnabe regulars have never hiked this particular trail and it will be completely new to us.  Andy, who has done it, says that it is only steep up at top....we will see!    We then take the Bill S. trail down that leads through a ferny mossy bay forest that even this late in the season will still be green! The majority of the climb is gradual  but the last 20 minutes to the top will get your heart rate up! This is a good hike if you want to bring wine.

If you have a smart phone you can download the meetup app and use the map function to guide you to the trailhead.

Please read and be familiar with the guidelines of the group as listed below.  It’s important before you come on a Wanderer hike that you agree and are prepared with the following.

As always:

  • We combine enjoyment of the trail with respect for everyone’s time.   A steady pace and we just keep going!  If you are in the lead you will end up waiting at trail junctions.  If you are in the back you will be asked to do your best to keep up with the group and at waiting points the group may move on as soon as you are within sight.  Our pace averages 2.5mph.  We do get separated from time to time as everyone walks their own pace but please bear in mind that you will need to be able to stay within a reasonable distance from the group.  Make sure this is something you are prepared for and would enjoy
  • Please always check your email the night before just in case there are any necessary adjustments to the hike details.  Cancellations or any adjustments will be posted by 10pm the previous evening.
  • Although this is a trail head that allows us to park outside of the park without paying a parking fee, I strongly urge you to support our state parks and purchase a Golden Poppy yearly pass.  http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=24163
  • RSVP etiquette must be followed. Only RSVP when you can commit to attend. Once you have RSVP'd if you have an emergency that means you have to cancel please change your RSVP by 5pm the prior day. This will avoid a "no-show" reflecting on your participation history. Over 3 "no-shows" might mean we have to excuse you from the group. We try very hard to respect each other in this group.
  • Give yourself time to find the trail head so that you arrive prior to the scheduled time.  That is the time we head out on the trail.  It would be disappointing to miss having you on the hike due to late arrival.  You will be left behind if you are not ready to head out at the hike start time.
  • Wear comfortable hiking shoes with good rugged soles that are well broken in.
  • Duration: 5 hours
  • Facilities: About 10 minutes from the beginning of the trail
  • Dogs?: none allowed on trail
  • Bring plenty of water.  More than one bottle is usually a good idea.
  • Dress in layers.  The hike starts off cool but rapidly warms up.
  • Bring a snack.  We always have a break at the top and since it's an easy walk back it's a great hike for wine.
  • Bring your smile and great attitude!  We are ALL about trail enjoyment while respecting everyone’s time!

See you on the trail!

Car pool etiquette- First and foremost....come prepared to drive. Yes.....I know.....a lot of you are trying to car pool because you don't want to or can't drive for whatever reason. I don't want you to be disappointed, so if you can't drive please be aware that you might not be able to join the hike. There is always that risk if you are counting on others to be your transportation. There may be no others wanting to car pool from your selected location or there might be a lot of people and everyone might want to ride. You might arrive late, be in the wrong spot or get stopped by a swarm of your paparazzi...come prepared to drive to the trail head if you want to hike! If we have a gang wanting to ride we determine who gets the rider seats by who has most recently been a driver in the past. This is worked out based by who shows up at the car pool location. We can't guarantee anyone a seat because we never know until that day who will show up. We do our best to work it out and make everyone happy but we need everyone to pitch in and help make it work! General rule of thumb for riders...$5 one hour or less to trailhead $8 over one hour to trailhead Please insist your driver accept the money. It's to cover more than gas money...it's the wear and tear on the vehicle. We like to take care of our drivers! Then PLEASE if possible try to use the two locations below. The more locations we have the less effective we are and it's so much more complicated. Exceptions would be if you are not close to either location.

Great hike --Libby, Nan & I decided to "go for it" when we saw the yellow tape, and made it down the trail -- glad we were "unofficial" -- no rangers and very little construction apparent. Thank you Leigh and Andy -- so appreciate your planning and all the great company.

We tease you about your "gentle slope" description, Andy, but thanks for giving me the strenuous uphill workout I needed. Thanks Leigh, Andy and everyone for another great hike on another beautiful day.

Uphill Evans did it again: He can't be trusted to give an accurate account of a slope! We had to really look for the few short stretches of "gentle climb" today. But we enjoyed hauling ourselves up the steep mountainside, burning many calories along the way. :)

Sometimes is easier to remember things when they don't go as planned. I think this is one of those hikes even with Andy's gentle uphill it was a great hike. Thanks Leigh for taking us to such a beautiful park. Now we have a reason to go back!

Well...we didn't get to do the my favorite Bill's trail but GOOD thing we had planned on doing the alternate route to the top....otherwise we would have been in for quite a surprise when we tried to go UP Bill's trail! Thank you to Marinoly, Jim and NapaStan for bringing wine and a big welcome to Libby and Nan who joined us(for the first part-Andy's gentle hill :) ) for the first time!!! The hike might not have gone as planned but it was a wonderful morning and I thank you all for joining me!

Hello comrade hikers ... I'm signed up for this hike and would really like to go, but am having second thoughts now with the on-going BART strike. I must cross the SR-Richmond Bridge which *under normal conditions* tends to get clogged up in the westbound direction during rush hour. I normally leave 1.5 hours before and get there just on time -- any more time on the road, especially in the stress of traffic tends to nullify the benefits of hiking. I'll check the traffic first thing tomorrow a.m. before I leave. If it looks like a mess, I may have to do a last minute cancellation. I see that there are 16 spots still open, so I hope that's OK.

Robin...that's fine. I hope to see you but understand if we don't!

I am fine with the uphill section of this hike but wondering if the downhill part is steep and slippery?

    October 20, 2013

    • Leigh

This is a very gentle down hill. We will zig zag our way down the mountain on a very beautiful trail. The down hill will be the best part!

I am cancelling - rather do the "moderate" hikes.

Hi Everyone...please note that we are doing an extended version of this hike and taking the bike path and a completely new route that most of us have not done. It still should be a moderate level hike and we will take it nice and easy. If you are uncertain about this new loop feel free to wait until we have done it and know all the details for sure.
I hope to see you all tomorrow!
