Late afternoon Walk in the Woods on Howell Mountain - Dogs welcome!

Ahhhh!  The sound of the breeze in the trees is all you will hear on this easy (good excercise) 4 - 6 mile walk in the wild, wooded land just east of St. Helena (and adjacent to Las Posadas State Forest), along fire roads, creek-side trails, and leaf-littered single track, with a few steep pitches to get your heart pounding a little bit. We'll meander along beautiful mossy streams, through manzanita thickets, pine forests, and groves of redwood trees. Overall elevation gain will be right around 1,000 feet. With the rain we had last week, the moss-covered rocks should be brilliant. (I'll provide maps for those who want to explore the trails on a mountain bike. Just let me know ahead of time).

We will meet at "The Corner," on Las Posadas Road in Angwin:

If you are coming south on Highway 29 from Callistoga, turn left on Deer Park Road just past Markham Vineyards in St. Helena. Cross the valley floor and go across the Silverado Trail at the flashing light.

If you are coming north on Highway 29 from Napa, turn right on Pope Street (just before the 76 station), cross the valley floor, then turn left onto the Silverado Trail. Go a couple of miles, then turn right onto Deer Park Road at the flashing red light.

Once on Deer Park Road, continue up the hill staying to the right. At “four corners” Deer Park Road turns into Howell Mountain Road and you will continue straight, bearing slightly to the left. Just before you get into the little community of Angwin (and just after the town's sign), about 1.3 miles past four corners, turn right onto Cold Springs Road and continue straight onto Las Posadas Road. At .8 miles, the road makes a sharp turn to the right. That is where we will park and begin our hike.

Car pool etiquette - First and foremost....come prepared to drive. Yes.....I know.....a lot of you are trying to car pool because you don't want to or can't drive for what ever reason. I don't want you to be disappointed, so if you can't drive please be aware that you might not be able to join the hike. There is always that risk if you are counting on others to be your transportation. There may be no others wanting to car pool from your selected location or there might be a lot of people and everyone might want to ride. You might arrive late, be in the wrong spot or be delayed by a swarm of your paparazzi...come prepared to drive if you want to hike! If we have a gang wanting to ride we determine who gets the rider seats by who has most recently been a driver in the past. This is worked out based by who shows up at the car pool location. We can't guarantee anyone a seat because we never know until that day who will show up. We do our best to work it out and make everyone happy but we need everyone to pitch in and help make it work! General rule of thumb for riders...$5 one hour or less to trailhead $8 over one hour to trailhead Please insist your driver accept the money. It's to cover more than gas money...it's the wear and tear on the vehicle. We like to take care of our drivers!

Then PLEASE if possible try to use the two locations below. The more locations we have the less effective we are and it's so much more complicated. Exceptions would be if you are not close to either location.

Car pool locations:

Windsor Office Depot parking lot suggested leave at 4:30

Petaluma-Lucky at the intersection of Lakeville and Caulfield Ln. Park closest to Payran St. suggested leave by 4:15

As always:

We combine enjoyment of the trail with respect for everyone’s time: a steady pace and we just keep going! If you are in the lead you will end up waiting at trail junctions. If you are in the back you will be asked to do your best to keep up with the group. (At waiting points the group may move on as soon as you are within sight.) Our pace averages 2.5 mph. We do get separated from time to time as everyone walks their own pace but please bear in mind that you will need to be able to stay within a reasonable distance from the group. Make sure this is something you are prepared for and would enjoy.

Please always check your email the night before just in case there are any necessary adjustments to the hike details. Cancellations or any adjustments will be posted by 10pm the previous evening.

RSVP etiquette: Only RSVP when you can commit to attend. If you have an emergency that means you have to cancel, please change your RSVP by 5pm the prior day. This will avoid a "no-show" reflecting on your participation history. (Over 3 "no-shows" might mean we have to excuse you from the group. We try very hard to respect each other in this group.)

Please arrive on time: Give yourself time to find the trail head so that you arrive prior to the scheduled time. The posted time is the time we head out on the trail. It would be disappointing to miss having you on the hike due to late arrival. You will be left behind if you are not ready to head out at the hike start time.

And the morel is still sitting on my kitchen counter...not 100% sure it won't kill us if we eat it!

What a beautiful evening! Thanks to the folks who made the trip to come and take a walk with me in the woods....We saw dogwood in bloom. Found a morel on the trail and the promise of rhodedendrons blooming in the weeks ahead! And a pink croc! All that, and we covered 4.7 miles with daylight to spare! Still trying to figure out our elevation gain...but there were definitely a couple of good climbs! Let's do it again!

Elaine, question my knee is better but not great. How much Downhill is there how steep or is it super gradual? Sounds beautiful and I'm off this week for Spring break would love to join if it's not too Steep! Or if it's very short at the downhills sectors...THANKS in advance for letting me know!

    April 9, 2013

    • Elaine d.

I'm not recalling any terribly steep downhill right now....but here's the beauty of this area...there are a bunch of different routes we can take....so we can avoid the really steep downhills but still get a good work- out on the uphills.

      April 9, 2013

    • Elaine d.

I think you'll be fine....we can change the route if we need to.....
