Mt Tam EXTRAVAGANZA 12-13 miles 3000ft

We are going to get the grand tour from Martha! She is taking us up, down, up some more and all around. It's her birthday and she is going to share one of her favorite hikes with us! Plan on lunching at Muir Beach!

This is what she has to say about the hike:

Hiking Route Dipsea trail, steep ravine downhill to hwy1, cross hwy 1 follow paved road (gated, we may see a car or 2) to the cabins, take a quick stop at the restrooms (nice one) head to the beach for lunch, back up the paved road, cross hwy1 take steep ravine trail all the way to pantoll ranger station, alpine trail, bootjack and redwood trail down to the muir woods and follow the paved trail to the exit, or stop at the coffee shop

As always:

  • We combine enjoyment of the trail with respect for everyone’s time. A steady pace and we just keep going! If you are in the lead you will end up waiting at trail junctions. If you are in the back you will be asked to do your best to keep up with the group and at waiting points the group may move on as soon as you are within sight. Make sure this is something you will enjoy.
  • Please always check your email the night before just in case there are any necessary adjustments. This is especially important if there are any weather issues. Cancellations due to weather will be posted by 10pm the previous evening.
  • Give yourself time to find the trail head so that you arrive prior to the scheduled time. That is the time we head out on the trail. It would be disappointing to miss having you on the hike due to late arrival. You will be left behind if you are not ready to head out at the hike start time.
  • Wear comfortable hiking shoes with good rugged soles that are well broken in.
  • Duration: 6+ hours
  • Facilities: Yes...at trailhead
  • Dogs?: none allowed
  • Bring plenty of water. More than one bottle is usually a good idea.
  • Dress in layers. The hike starts off cool but rapidly warms up.
  • Bring a snack. We always have a break at a scenic spot about half way.

· FOR car pools ...we have a change. Please document your car pool info in your RSVP comments NOT the general comments below. That will eliminate many msgs to the hike attendees. Car pool etiquette- Come prepared to drive, be aware that there may be no others wanting to car pool from your selected location or there might be a lot of people and everyone might want to ride. We determine who gets the rider seats by who has most recently been a driver in the past. This is worked out based by who shows up at the car pool location. We can't guarantee anyone a seat because we never know until that day who will show up. We do our best to work it out and make everyone happy but we need everyone to pitch in and help make it work!

Then PLEASE if possible try to use the two locations below. The more locations we have the less effective we are and it's so much more complicated. Exceptions would be if you are not close to either location.

Car pool locations:

Coddingtown Library parking lot suggested leave at 8:30

Petaluma-Lucky at the intersection of Lakeville and Caulfield Ln. Park closest to Payran St. suggested leave by 8:55

General room of thumb...$5 one hour or less to trailhead $8 over one hour to trailhead Please insist your driver accept the money. It's to cover more than gas money...it's the wear and tear on the vehicle. We like to take care of our drivers!

If anyone needs a ride up from Fairfax (the back way over Mt. Tam), I'd be happy to meet/drive. Looking forward to tomorrow and meeting you all!

Hi, I'm a little confused about the exact meeting place. 1 Muir Road is a residential street, with no apparent public parking. Isn't it 1 Muir Woods? That would be the entrance to Muir Woods, wouldn't it? Btw, the coordinates given are quoted by other meet-ups to be "not always reliable". Please clarify? Many thanx, M.A.

Go to the Muir Woods National Monument Park. Park in the parking lot for the Muir Woods Park. We will meet OUTSIDE the pay kiosk (we don't go in the park) and then proceed to the Dipsea trail head together.

    Hi Mary Ann,

We will meet at Muir Woods parking lot. Dip sea trail will be on the left of the bathrooms. We will NOT need to go to the payment kiosk.

Directions http://maps.google.co... Once you click the link the "B" is at the entrance to the parking lot and you can enter your address on the left into "A" and get driving directions. This will get you to the Muir woods parking lot. You I think the parking lot. You can park on the side of the road if the parking lot is full.
