Still Photography Workshop - Saddle up your camera gear, let's shoot the rodeo

If you enjoy action photography and using long telephoto lenses to get into the action, then you'll enjoy shooting our rodeo event at the Ram Rodeo at the Orangeville Fairgrounds.

Bring your Alpha A-mount or E-mount camera or RX gear for some great shooting and fun. Sony staff will be on hand to help you get the most out of your gear. You can also try out the newest lenses and Alpha cameras at the event. If there's a lens you want to try just send me a note and I'll try and get one.

We plan to shoot the rodeo action plus I've arranged for a portrait shoot of one of the cowboys. This will be a fun event. It's suitable for any of the Alpha cameras but if you use the RX system, then you'll enjoy the behind the chutes scene and portrait opportunities.

Since Sony is paying for this event you have to use a Sony camera. If you don't yet have a Sony camera let me know and I'll bring one for you to try.

Attendance and "No Shows". If you can't make the event please cancel 24 hours before the start of the event. If you fail to cancel you'll be recorded as a "No Show" and if this continues, you'll be dropped from future events.

Thanks Rob! Once again a well organized event. Also thank you for letting me use your A77ii after my A77 died on me during the middle of the show.

Rob: quick question, I was trying to down load the pictures that I shot on the camera that I borrow into light room, it is telling me that the format is not recognized. Is this because it is a new camera? I'm wondering how long lightroom takes to catch up? Any idea? Thanks

You need Lightroom 5.5. Alternatively you can doenload the Camera Raw converter 8.5 and use older versions of Lightroom. I updated to 5.5 last night and everything is working fine.

    • Ann

Thanks for suggestions, I have lightroom 5, and currently downloading the converter.

I am going through some of the pictures now and it seems it is almost impossible to take a bad picture with the a77II and the 70-200. I'll add a few to the flickr gallery shortly.

Rob: wondering if I could try a 18 - 200 lens, I've been using the lens that came with the camera 16-50, would like a chance to try something with more zoom. I'm really looking forward to Saturday.

Not the 500mm, there is only one in Canada and it's in Edmonton this week. I will have the[masked]

    Hi Rob,
I can offer a ride from North Burlington. Also would you recommend using a polarizer or would a protective filter be better (assuming dusty conditions)?

    July 11, 2014

    • Rob S.

I would use a UV filter

      July 12, 2014

  • R. C.

Are there any extra Sony cameras available for use on Saturday? Mine seems to be having issues…I stopped in at Sony this morning, but they were unable to remedy the problem before tomorrow's rodeo.

Anyone have any experience taking their camera in for service? My A77 needs a repair and im not sure if i can get it back in time for this event.

    June 2, 2014

    • Garon

It turned out that they only checked my camera 14 days after i dropped it off for service. And the technician could not reproduce the error after checking it for a minute and wanted more information from me....

      July 11, 2014

    • Garon

I had to take the camera back as-is for a job... So now after 2 weeks nothing got repaired and im still left with a wonky camera.

Is Anyone carpooling from Toronto? I would be interested.

    July 4, 2014

I'd like to get a ride from downtown core or YUS (line1) subway, or give a ride from there.

  • Morrie N.

    Hi Rob,

Thanks again for all you (and Sony) do here. I have 2 questions:

    1) which lens (or lenses) would you recommend for this event, and b) can I bring a non meetup guest (with a Sony Camera)? :)

    July 8, 2014

    • Rob S.

Sure bring a friend. Any lens will do depending on how close you get. My best work was done with the RX1 which has the fixed 35mm. I've also got some great shots with the 24 and 50. For straight action a[masked] is nice but the great photos are in the details.

      July 9, 2014

    • Morrie N.

Thanks Rob! Will you have an extra[masked] I can try on my NEX6? :)

      July 9, 2014

  • Glen

Are we allowed to bring a tripod or is this monopod only?

    July 7, 2014

    • Rob S.

I would bring a monopod if you have one, no room for a tripod unless you shoot from the hill, which is not a bad thing.

      July 8, 2014

  • Rob S.

When you get to the gate tell them you're in the Sony Photo Workshop. They'll be expecting you.

    July 7, 2014

    • Jamie L.

Hi Rob, is there anyway that I can borrow an nex and a 24mm lens or something along those lines. An a65 and a similar lens would be good too. I am in the Saturday workshop. Thanks Jamie

      July 7, 2014

  • Grant D.

Looking forward to getting some really good action shots.

    July 3, 2014

never been to a Rodeo, cant wait.

    July 1, 2014

  • Ann

Rob: I am have the NEX6 and the lense that came with the camera. I have not invested in other lenses yet, wanted to get a handle on the camera first. It would be great to try different ones to figure out what one would be the best fit for me. Please put me on the list to try the telephoto lens. Thanks
