(Not Backpacking -- Camping for the weekend). Booked in advanced due to popularity of the venue, this camping venue often booked out 6 months in advance as it is one of very few private Camping Venue that can be booked out privately for small groups. Also included will be a shorter river trail to two scared sites on Sunday. The highlight of the weekend will certainly the Heiveld Arch, said to be one of the big attractions in the Cederberg. Houdenbek is a picturesque area, nestled in the rugged Skurweberg Mountains, lending itself to outdoor activity or merely the perfect scene and peaceful weekend away. The Houdenbek Camp site offers a private campsite that caters for one party at the time. The campers will have total exclusivity. There are 5 places to pitch tents, with stunning views towards the Sandrivier Dam, which is also ideal for swimming. Clean running fountain water is available. There is one hot shower and a separate toilet with a basin. There is a basin to wash dishes with hot water. There is no electricity available. Bring your own tent and if you don’t have one, we will try and organise one for you. We were at this venue back in April 2017, and a favourite with its location and stunning views. The rock formations also offered a breath taking experience of beauty. When you arrive at the Camp Site, you can truly see where the Cederberg begins, with the sudden change in landscape.

Cost: R[masked] per person to secure your booking. This will be a self-catering camping option, with shared communal lunch and dinner. Included in the payment will be your accommodation for the 2 x nights and the various guided activities on offer.

Included in the payment will be your site for both nights, self-catering camping (provide your own tent) for both nights, and the various guided activities on offer. Suitable for Most Levels of Fitness, but some minimum fitness is required.

The self-catering accommodation where we are staying at is located 60km left of Ceres or 2h30min / 200km from Cape Town. Wherever possible we will share the transport in getting there.

PLEASE NOTE:

-------------------

There are only two requirements to join this event. One is that we have spoken on the telephone, so that I can to give you a sense of what is on offer before you book. The other is that you need to have done one of the regular Sunday walks that I offer in the past 6 months or at least one of the regular walks in the six months leading up to the event. This structure / qualifying requirement has been put in place, so that I can gauge your fitness levels, meet you in person and determine whether you will be able to cope with the hike on offer. Joining in on at one of the walks before the event, also enhances the sense of soulful connectedness, as you will know some of the people going. The weekends away offer a combination of adventure of soulfulness, relaxation, group sharing of the day’s experience and time out is allocated for quiet time. By joining a walk I also get a chance to meet you and you will get to know what is on offer in person. This weekend away will be suitable for most levels of fitness. This extra time on the trails on these weekends away provides time to connect with the beauty of nature, including plenty of opportunity for taking pictures. There is also own time allocated on these weekends to explore the beauty of place where we are staying. Often there is an opportunity to swim, if it’s warm enough.

ABOUT THE SACRED SITES

------------------------------------------------------------------------

At least two panels of interesting paintings are within easy walking distance from where we are staying. Access to the paintings is with the farmer's permission only. A magnificent walk to the Heiveld Arch starts here; permits are obtained at the farm house.

Site One: is about a kilometre from Houdenbek along the tarred road towards Op die Berg. Follow the road away from the farm, past the first massive rocks on the right, until you reach a large solitary pine tree standing on the left of the road. On the right a track leads off into the veld, below a low rocky outcrop. About 100 metres from the main road there is a narrow shelf in the outcrop, and some interesting paintings above it. This may have been a habitable site, where the people camped in the veld around the outcrop.

Site Two: Walk or drive up past the farm shop to the dam. Follow the Heiveld trail for about 200 metres up the first kloof; the paintings are marked, in a shallow overhang on the left. The subject matter and situation strongly suggest that this was a shaman site. The large figure in the centre of the rock wall is peculiar in that it appears to have both feminine characteristics (a possible breast; possibly carrying a baby) and masculine.

The very short legs and unknown black object around the waist are unusual. The apparent bisexual nature of the figure seems to be echoed in the small figure standing above the running leg of the hookhead figure to the right. There are its two very clear entoptics at this site. One is more difficult to notice at first: it seems to be just a few scratched lines. If you look carefully you will see that these have been painted. The second entoptic is a dramatic example of zig-zag, lightning-like lines of power; the strength in the image is extraordinary.
