Full wetsuits to be provided worn to keep you warm. This micro adventure from Gravity adventures offers Coasteering in Simonstown from the stunning Windmill Beach and 2 hrs of exploring the inter-tidal zone, snorkling and rock jumping. This will certainly be an adventure not to be missed. We did this back in March 2017 and it was so much fun ;-)-

Coasteering is a new adventure activity that allows you to get up close and personal with the ocean! Pioneered in Wales, Gravity is proud to be the first to offer this activity near Cape Town. Coasteering bears some resemblance to Canyoning or Kloofing but takes place along a protected coastline rather than in a river course. Each participant is equipped with wetsuit, PFD, helmet and booties and is accompanied by a guide. A second guides acts as a safety back up from a boat in the water. The activity takes place among the protected boulders near Simons Town. The crystal clear waters and protection from the South Easter make this the perfect location. An added bonus is the great marine life – swimming with penguins anyone? Although there are a number of rock jumps, none are compulsory so this activity will suit a variety of skill levels.

ABOUT THE ADVENTURE ON OFFER

----------------------------------------

You will find coasteering listed in the Oxford English Dictionary. From the combination of the words coast and mountaineering, coasteering is defined as: “the sport or activity of exploring a rocky coastline by climbing, jumping, and swimming.” It’s a bit like kloofing – just in the sea.

Who is this activity aimed at? Everyone really; however, if you don’t like kelp, are afraid of heights, and swimming in the ocean is not your thing, then best you give this one a miss. Gravity Adventures provides everything you need, from wetsuits and life jackets, to helmets, goggles and snorkels. The meeting point for this coast advent is from Windmill Beach in Simon’s Town.

You start off by snorkelling around the sheltered bay and then headed around a large granite rock in the sea so that we were flanked by open water on one side and the rock and kelp forest on the other. Our guide will point out some of the marine life that can be seen for example starfish, blue and red anemones, soft feathery looking fanworms, nudibranchs, speckled klipvis and hottentot fish weaving their way through the kelp. From there we head on the exciting bouldering part as we make our way onto the granite rocks and manoeuvred into position for the first leap. The next few jumps range between 2m to 7m, but they are all optional. In all an adventure not to missed. A bonus will if we get to swim with the penguins.

WHAT IS COASTEERING

-------------------------------------

Coasteering is a great way to explore the rugged South African coastline, combining various adventure disciplines for a great outdoor experience. Experienced tour guides will help you along the way, offering a variety of routes to suit your ability and agility.

Did you know?

The first mention of coasteering in literature appears in the 1973 book, Sea Cliff Climbing, by John Cleare and Robin Collomb. Coasteering is a relatively new outdoor adventure activity in South Africa, but given that the country has so many excellent stretches of coast to explore, it is likely to grow in popularity as more people discover the attraction.

Coasteering involves travelling along the coastline without any form of transport. Scrambling over rocks, jumping from cliffs into the ocean, and swimming between points are all part and parcel of this coastline adventure experience.

This type of activity will appeal to hikers, rock climbers and swimmers, as well as anyone who enjoys the outdoors and doesn't mind getting wet.

Coasteering routes are set up so that rock climbing is only done in sections where there is a straight drop back to the water below, and where a guide can be on standby as a safety precaution. The equipment used for coasteering includes wetsuits, helmets, buoyancy aids and shoes suitable for climbing.

It was during the late 1990s that coasteering developed into a guided adventure activity, becoming very popular in places like Wales and Cornwall in the United Kingdom. Coasteering races are now run around the world.

Gravity Adventures in Cape Town is the South African pioneer of coasteering, offering two different routes from which explorers can choose. The waters of the Atlantic Ocean along Cape Town's shores are known to be rather chilly, but with a wetsuit and plenty of adrenalin pumping, explorers won't really notice this during their coasteering expedition.
