Welcome to The South Bay Contemporary Literature Book Club! This book club will take a deep dive into U.S. Literature published since the 1960's.
We will meet to discuss a recent novel, play, memoir, graphic novel, or some hybrid of different forms, something challenging that will reward close and sustained reading.
This book club will expose you to a wide variety of perspectives about contemporary literature as each meeting will center around lively yet focused discussion about the reading. The discussion will draw on the perspective of all participants.
There will be questions available to members in advance of a meetup to focus our discussions, but conversation is not confined to these questions -- they're just a starting point.
We will emphasize literature written by members of historically marginalized groups though we will also read literature authored by majority groups. We will focus on literature's relationship to culture, including issues of representation and identity, as well as universal themes such as love and coming-of-age.
You are welcome to join even if you have not finished the reading or are just curious about the discussion.
Andy, the co-organizer, of this group is a Community College English Instructor with both a Masters in literature from San Francisco State and a Bachelor's in literature from UC Santa Cruz.
