The Forest of Nisene Marks - Singletrack Ride

  • This location is shown only to members

  • Let's Ride!

We will meet at Epicenter Cycling in Aptos at 5:45 PM.

We will start from there promptly at 6PM and ride the fireroad for a short while, then drop into the newly renovated, bike-legal singletrack in the lower area of The Forest of Nisene Marks.

This ride is suitable for advanced beginners, and will be about 8-10 miles, 1-2 hours.

I plan to make this a regular ride this summer,  and as the evenings get longer we will venture out either up the fire road toward Sand Point, or across the creek to explore the less traveled western side of the park.

My rides are always at a slower climbing pace, but this area is pretty mellow, as it flows up and down alongside the creek, with the occasional narrow or rooty section. Excellent for a relaxing after-work cruise through the oaks and redwoods.

Remember, all riders need to be members of & South Bay Mountain Bike Group. Guests are no longer allowed. All riders need to RSVP as a member.

    Distance: 6-8 miles round trip

    Difficulty rating: Using Ray's difficulty rating system, I'd give 90% of this ride a 1-2, and 10% a 3.

Trail surface: paved or well-graded dirt fire road to start, then mostly smooth and fairly wide singletrack. One long, wide root-y climb/descent, and a section of narrow trail with a steep dropoff.

Terrain: Shaded second-growth redwood forest, nice for riding when it's warm. Bring layers in case the fog rolls in.

Bring water because there is none in the park

The restroom at the entrance station inside the park is pretty bad. I recommend using the restroom before you arrive.

Rain will cancel. I will post a weather update by 8 AM if we need to cancel.

From San Jose, I highly recommend taking "the back way": 17 to Summit Rd. East, to Soquel-San Jose Road south. Drive about 12 miles, then turn left on Soquel Dr and proceed 3.7 miles to Aptos Creek Road. Turn left on Aptos Creek Road (Aptos Station). There is parking next to Epicenter Cycling in the dirt parking area on the right.

OR if you enjoy sitting in traffic you can take 17 South toward Santa Cruz and then south on Highway 1. Exit at the State Park Drive exit from Highway 1. Turn left on State Park Drive at the traffic light. Turn right on Soquel Drive. Go 1 mile to Aptos Creek Road. Turn left on Aptos Creek Road (Aptos Station). There is parking next to Epicenter Cycling in the dirt parking area on the right.

If you're not sure where you are going or think you will be late, please leave earlier. It is not fair to have everyone else wait while you get ready to ride. Bring a spare tube and master link. There is a restroom on site.

***Please remember, a helmet is required for all our rides.***
