Monte Bello Downhill ~ Post Ride Wine Tasting & Picnic

  • Aug 30, 2014 · 9:15 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

RSVPing YES for a ride and not showing is not cool. Changing your RSVP after they close will not give another member a chance to get on the list and is the same as a no show. Please be courteous and drop out early enough to give the more reliable riders a chance to adjust their schedules and attend.

We will do a Level 3 Ride, 18ish -mile ride. You’ll carpool from Picchetti Ranch OSP in Cupertino to the Waterwheel Creek Trail at the top of Monte Bello Road. There is no parking at this area, so we will leave the bikes with a few riders, park the cars at the bottom and catch a shuttle to the top. There will be a small fee to cover this. The ride will cover most of the single track and fire roads in Monte Bello Preserve before heading out on Stevens Canyon Road, then back to Picchetti Ranch Preserve. The route is mostly downhill (about a 2,200-foot net descent), but riders will climb more than 1,500 feet along the way. Please be early, as we need to carpool to the ride starting point location.

Picchetti Winery, built in the late 1890s, is currently leased to and operated by a private party. Visitors are welcome to enjoy public tastings in the historic building or on the adjoining picnic areas.

Where to meet: Meet at the Picchetti Ranch Preserve parking lot. From the intersection of I-280 and Foothill Expressway, go 3.5 miles southwest (toward the mountains) on Foothill Boulevard/Stevens Canyon Road. Turn right on Monte Bello Road. The preserve is 0.5 miles up Monte Bello Road on the left. Participants will carpool to the trailhead for this activity.

There may not be restrooms open this early.

Well, this happened today. Poor kid - looks like he will recover, but a good reminder of how close we get to the wild stuff. http://news.yahoo.com/mountain-lion-attacks-6-old-california-boy-215926164.html

Yes, I heard about this. Sad for the family and for the cat.

The Lyre bird was also very entertaining. See rare footage here:

Thank's Ray and Michelle for another great ride! Sorry you missed the picnic.

I always love riding the Monte Bello trails off Page Mill. And the post ride picnic concept is one I think we should do more of! The Picchetti winery is a great spot. Thanks to all who picked up a bottle of wine for all of us to share.

Long, hot, rewarding ride. Followed by great wines and picnic at Pichetti. Entertained by each other, and the resident peacock and rooster, aka Fabio ;-)

And the Lyre (not 'Liar) bird! :)

Hot and a little hellish at the very end, but what a fun day!

I love the single track at Monte Bello. And, picnicking at the winery after the ride was a relaxing way to recover from those long, hot climbs. I'd definitely be up for a repeat of this ride. Thanks, Ray and Michelle, for another fun adventure.

Ray, how much earlier should we arrive for shuttle?

If everyone is there by 9:15 that would be great.

Please let me know if a spot opens up for those of us on the waitlist!

Are we bringing our own lunches, or can you get food at the Winery?

    August 29, 2014

    • naomi

We're bringing food - sandwiches for ourselves and a few items to share.

      August 29, 2014

    • Ray G

Everyone should plan to bring your own food, I do not think there will be any to buy there.

If anyone has a vehicle that can carry another bike, that would be great as we will need to shuttle our bikes to the top and park at the bottom. We will than catch a ride up to our bikes. Remember to bring some cash for the ride back up.

I'll bring my truck along and that should be able to carry at least 4 or 5 bikes.
