You don't have to look too far to find fun-loving folks in Santa Cruz and this event should bring them out. The Polar Plunge is a fundraiser benefiting the Special Olympics of Northern California & Nevada, representing over 22,000 athletes. This year, I will be a Plunger so not photographing but I hope you all get good shots.

First, the plunge is NOT a swim – it’s a party! And there are Plungers (who get wet) and Chickens (who don't get wet but still support the cause).

Second, costumes are encouraged.

Third, no wet suits, that’s cheating!

Costume contest is at 11:30 a.m., the Plunge is at 12:00 noon. We can photograph the crowds and costumed revelers, the plungers getting ready on the beach, or we can get in the water and shoot back at the hoards as they enter the water (watch out for splashes on the lenses).

Also, this year they've added a special Puppy Plunge category where folks can plunge with their dogs. Dogs in costumes are being encouraged.

What to bring:

• Wipe cloths, towels, polarizing filters
• Change of shoes and/or clothes (depending on your enthusiasm)

This isn't a good event for tripods, too many people and we wouldn't want to create trip hazards.

The event is free for spectators. This year they're at a new location, Rio Del Mar State Beach in Aptos, CA Please use google maps, the map generated by Meetup is off a few blocks. Directions: From Santa Cruz follow Highway 1 south to Aptos and take the Rio Del Mar exit. Follow signs for Rio Del Mar.
