Review of Meeting on 10/27/2012

GREAT MEETING TODAY!

We had some great discussions and presentations:

• Due to the initiative for Health care information going electronic, there will be some great opportunities for web apps in that area.
• We learned how Ruby on Rails provides an integrated solution for web app development. We also reviewed the various tools available for server and clientside interaction that are necessary for Ruby on Rails. We will go into more detail on this at our next meeting.
• We discussed a XNA game and how easy it is to create a 2D game for marketing and sales of a product.
• We were given a brief presentation on how a proprietary database with a VT100 terminal interface for a corporate environment was ported into a web based front-end  with a SQL server/ASP backend.

Please let me know if want to speak at our next meeting. Our next meeting will be on Nov 17 due to the fact that Nov 24 will coincide with the thanksgiving holiday.

A few asked for some good books on Ruby and RoR. Here are some I found to be good.

Programming Ruby 1.9 by Dave Thomas with Chad Fowler and Andy Hunt (Pragmatic Bookshelf)

Ruby on Rails by Michael Hartl (available free online) look for version 3.2

Beginning Rails 3 by Carneiro
