Writing is by nature a solitary activity. Yet it is all about communication. Let's meet and communicate about our writing in a helpful, safe atmosphere.

South Charlotte/York County Writer's Group has been organizing critique groups since the summer of 2014. As of this writing there are four critique groups meeting regularly. In Fort Mill , the "Friday Fiction" group meets at Calvary Chapel every Friday evening at 6 pm. Two to three writers share their efforts with the rest of the group and receive honest and useful feedback and suggestions. Recently one member has been sharing non-fiction writing.

The Novel Writer's Critique Group meets once a month in Pineville. The 3 to 4 members of that group share about 10 pages of writing for their project. Generally everyone gets to present every other month. This is a new group as of Spring 2016 and is focused on polishing finished novels for publication.

Also in Pineville, a new prompt writing group is struggling to get started. Since I am currently the only regularly attending member of this "group", it can become anything we want it to be.

Finally, the "Let's Do It!" group meets every other week in South Charlotte (which here is defined as South of Wendover) usually on Thursday mornings at 10. Writing to prompts is the central focus, however we also share critiques of longer on-going projects.

What this group is: A simple honest critique group by mostly amateur or self-published authors who wish to improve their writing and share the joys and struggles of writing with each other.

What this group is not:

- this is not a class. The groups and general atmosphere are loosely based on Quaker principles, which in this context means that we are all equals and we each bring something unique and important to the group. Honesty helps all of us understand each other and our work more deeply.

- While many are interested in sharing or publishing their work, this is not the primary focus of the groups at this time. There are other groups in the Charlotte area which are more focused on the publishing aspects of writing. Currently this is not one of those groups.

- This is not a well-greased and smoothly running machine. This is largely a one woman project, with help from all those who attend the groups. There will be times when you might find the group is not as organized as you would like. I invite you to speak up, and if possible offer suggestions or offer to help.

- While there is no charge to join or participate, there are costs involved. Meetup charges about $90 every six months for this group to use their platform. I request that those who attend a group donate $1 per session to defray those costs. Whatever is not donated I make up, however if there are not enough donations and I am unable to cover the excess, the group will shut down.
