• Book Club: Raising Stony Mayhall

    Andrew's Home

From award-winning author Daryl Gregory, whom Library Journal called “[a] bright new voice of the twenty-first century,” comes a new breed of zombie novel—a surprisingly funny, vividly frightening, and ultimately deeply moving story of self-discovery and family love. In 1968, after the first zombie outbreak, Wanda Mayhall and her three young daughters discover the body of a teenage mother during a snowstorm. Wrapped in the woman’s arms is a baby, stone-cold, not breathing, and without a pulse. But then his eyes open and look up at Wanda—and he begins to move. The family hides the child—whom they name Stony—rather than turn him over to authorities that would destroy him. Against all scientific reason, the undead boy begins to grow. For years his adoptive mother and sisters manage to keep his existence a secret—until one terrifying night when Stony is forced to run and he learns that he is not the only living dead boy left in the world. Please bring snacks or drinks. Or volunteer to bring pizza. We like to eat while we discuss books.

  • Creature Double Feature Party: Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla Double Feature

We're turning up the giant monster heat in July with a Godzilla double feature, by request! We'll watch two movies from the Millennium era of Toho Godzilla movies. It's always difficult to select one or two picks from the 35 Godzilla movies. Opinions range wildly regarding what constitutes a "good" Godzilla movie. These two Godzilla movies are among my personal favorites. There are reasons: 1. The giant monster action is top notch in both. 2. Special effects are at the high end for the period. 3. Although the central characters change, the two movies are interrelated, with Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. released as a sequel one year following Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla. 4. The human stories – while still typical of the genre – are a bit more compelling and interesting than most. 5. Finally, Tokyo S.O.S. features the return of Dr. Chujo (played by Hiroshi Koizumi), returning more than 40 years later to reprise a character from the movie Mothra in 1961. Prepare to be blown away by movies #26 & #27 in the longest continuously running movie franchise in the history of cinema (Guinness World Records). Your host will provide the venue, movie pass, pizza, water, soda, ice and other essentials. Attendees are encouraged to bring beverages and food to share. If you'd like to make a contribution, thanks! What should you bring? I recommend craft beer, wine, liquor, sandwiches, snack food and whatever else you enjoy. Thanks to all the regular attendees for making past events such a feast. Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002) - From RottenTomatoes.com: "Godzilla is pitted against his mechanical counterpart, Mechagodzilla. Humans are under attack by the green beast. With little hope left, they build the giant man-piloted robot Mechagodzilla to defend the world. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi" Rotten Tomatoes: Tomatometer: N/A | Audience: 70% https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/godzilla_against_mechagodzilla Trailer: https://youtu.be/CkJ_n9ygZRw Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. (2003) - From RottenTomatoes.com: "Fifty years after he first attacked Tokyo, Godzilla is back on the rampage in this monster opus from Toho Studios. After numerous rounds of combat with Japan's most furious monsters, the robotic beast Mechagodzilla is in for some much needed repairs when a handful of sprites appear before the scientists putting the machine back in fighting shape. The enchanted ones warn the scientists that their actions could have grave consequences, but it isn't long before Godzilla, the most fearsome of all monsters, returns to the scene to prove his might once and for all. What's more, Godzilla is joined by Mothra for a reign of terror that threatens to devastate the island. With few alternatives, Japan's leaders pit the repaired Mechagodzilla against Godzilla and Mothra, but it quickly becomes unclear if the robot will obey its human creators or join forces with the flesh-and-blood monsters. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi" Rotten Tomatoes: Tomatometer: 80% | Audience: 72% https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/godzilla_tokyo_sos2003 Trailer: https://youtu.be/bLWSYtXoacM

  • Movie: Crawl on cheapie Tuesday and drinks afterwards at upstairs bistro

This creature feature takes place in our own dystopian state--Florida--and takes advantage of our primal fears--hurricanes and alligators. What could be bad? It got 80% on rotten tomatoes. . When a massive hurricane hits her Florida hometown, Haleey (Kaya Scodelario) ignores evacuation orders to search for her missing father (Barry Pepper). Finding him gravely injured in the crawl space of their family home, the two become trapped by quickly encroaching floodwaters. As time runs out to escape the strengthening storm, Haley and her father discover that the rising water level is the least of their fears. Assuming movie will still be playing on the 30th (box office is doing well so it's a good bet) we will go to the show closest to 6pm. LInk posted when available. Then we'll head upstairs for a drink or late dinner. BTW, last time we tried the bistro upstairs the food was pretty good. They seem to have cleaned up their act.

If you'd like to make a contribution, thanks! What should you bring? I recommend craft beer, wine, liquor, sandwiches, snack food and whatever else you enjoy. Please Note: There have been several complaints about blocked driveways. So, I'm going to have to make the overflow parking the "main" parking for events. If you need to drop someone or something off, feel free to come in through the gate and then park in overflow. If you need an escort to show you the way, please ask. There's simply not enough guest parking for everyone. I enjoy hosting these events but I also have to be a considerate neighbor. Thank you for your support!

  • Book Club: Let's Discuss NOS4A2 by Joe Hill

    Andrew's Home

NOS4A2 is a spine-tingling novel of supernatural suspense from master of horror Joe Hill, the New York Times bestselling author of Heart-Shaped Box and Horns. Victoria McQueen has a secret gift for finding things: a misplaced bracelet, a missing photograph, answers to unanswerable questions. On her Raleigh Tuff Burner bike, she makes her way to a rickety covered bridge that, within moments, takes her wherever she needs to go, whether it’s across Massachusetts or across the country. Charles Talent Manx has a way with children. He likes to take them for rides in his 1938 Rolls-Royce Wraith with the NOS4A2 vanity plate. With his old car, he can slip right out of the everyday world, and onto the hidden roads that transport them to an astonishing – and terrifying – playground of amusements he calls “Christmasland.” Then, one day, Vic goes looking for trouble—and finds Manx. That was a lifetime ago. Now Vic, the only kid to ever escape Manx’s unmitigated evil, is all grown up and desperate to forget. But Charlie Manx never stopped thinking about Victoria McQueen. He’s on the road again and he’s picked up a new passenger: Vic’s own son. Bring snacks, pizza, dessert, adult beverages if you'd like to share!

  • Book Club: Lair by James Herbert -- #2 in The Rats trilogy

Let's be horrified with Lair, book #2 in The Rats trilogy. We read #1 but you don't have to read that one to understand (or be grossed out by) this one. Not for the nervous." —Daily Mirror The mutant white rat had grown and mated, creating offspring in its own image. They dominated the others, the dark-furred ones, who foraged for food and brought it back to the Lair. The dark rats were restless, tormented by a craving they could not satisfy—but the white slug-like thing that ruled them knew. Its two heads weaved to and fro, and a stickiness drooled from its mouth, as it remembered the taste of human flesh. Bring snacks, pizza, dessert, adult beverages if you'd like to share!
