Getting Unstuck

Notes from Meeting July 2010

What Gets You Stuck?

  • Insecurity -- Not good enough. Did I make the right decision for this story?
  • Avoidance -- too much pain in writing from the heart
  • Lazy -- I just don't know what to do. Don't want to go there. It's hopeless. This is crap.
  • Wandering topic -- Story goes where you didn't think it would. This isn't what I meant to write!

Getting Unstuck
  • Make a plan for your writing session. What goal do you want to accomplish in this time? And also decompressing afterwards. What do you need to do to make it less painful?
  • Skip around -- don't stay in story order. Write the end first!
  • Outline
  • Story prompts www.storyspinner.com
  • Characterization -- develop your character in a profile.
    • Take them to dinner! How do they behave with you & your guests? Write from their perspective or yours
    • Blog or journal in character!
  • Have somebody else look at it -- Maybe you need another perspective
  • Don't let anybody else look at it! -- If you're too overwhelmed by feedback, just spend some time with you & your story alone
  • Journal; just keep the words going! Morning pages; write 3 pages every morning
  • Reading -- what other people wrote! Be inspired

Thoughts on Specific Writing Conundrums
  • Transitions are a little over-rated. You might not need as much as you think!
  • Make a decision!
  • Describing a scene for a reader's mind; Don't obsess over it.
    • Take what you like from writers in similar genres
