Rising almost 2,000 feet above the beaches of Pacifica, here is where the sun often breaks through the clouds. Even when the sun continues to hide, there’s still a chance that by the time we hike to the summit we'll be hiking above the clouds. Montara mountain (also called McNee Ranch) is part of Montara State Beach. The mountain is a northern spur of the Santa Cruz Mountains and features the only undisturbed Coastal Mountain Habitat with over 100 miles of coastline.
We will start from the Graywhale Cove State Park trailhead, which is 4.8 miles from the Summit of Montara Mountain. Elevation gain is 1,898ft, but the views are spectacular! The total hike will be 9.6 miles.
Directions to Trailhead: Take 280 North to Highway 92 towards Half Moon Bay then take Highway 1 North to the San Mateo Coast, north of Montara on U.S. Highway 1. The only available automobile parking is on the east side of the highway, which is where the trailhead starts.
Carpool: The best carpool location is the Arastradero Park and Ride near 280 in Palo Alto. Volunteer drivers will be needed. Meet at 8:00 a.m.
Optional Lunch Afterwards: http://www.camelotfishandchips.com/index.html . Most authentic fish & chips in the Bay Area.
Other: Dress in layers as this mountain creates weather and we never know what it is going to be 2,000 feet up; right on the ocean.
I will be the sweep and the leader!
There is a larger parking lot down the road - this is where we will begin the hike - the other lot holds about four or five cars and that is too small.
Note: This is a moderately strenuous hike with almost 2000' gain in elevation.
