New Meetup: Mount Nadonna Hike

Announcing a new Meetup for South Bay Ramblers Hiking Group!

What: Mount Nadonna Hike

When: Saturday, November 6,[masked]:30 AM

Where: (A location has not been chosen yet.)

This mostly wooded hike is strenuous for the first 1.25 miles, after which it gets pretty easy. The hike is about 8 miles. Allow 3.5 hours.

We?ll start by climbing about 1000 feet on the well-maintained Sprig trail before cutting through the campground and taking the Giant Twins into our loop. (They are worth the detour.) After that, we?ll hike around the top of Mount Madonna, pass a pen of white deer, and take a break for lunch at the summer house of Henry Miller, the well-known cattle rancher. Don?t set your expectations too high?nobody will be serving us prime rib, and we won?t be taking a dip in the pool. In fact, all but a couple of walls and some foundations of the old house have long since crumbled, but there?s plenty of signage to peruse the history, and enough remains to trigger the imagination as to what used to be. After lunch, we?ll take a ride on the Merry-Go-Round Trail, featuring views across the upper Santa Clara valley as we descend back to Sprig Lake.

Car pool: Meet at Ohlone/Chynoweth Lightrail station on Santa Teresa Blvd at 7:45 a.m. Coming from 85 North, take Santa Teresa exit and turn left. Turn left again at the next traffic light. From 85 South, take Santa Teresa exit and go straight at the traffic lights. From 87 North, take Santa Teresa exit and turn right at the traffic lights.

Driving Directions to Trailhead: From Gilroy, take Hwy 152 West 4.8 miles to Sprig Lake parking lot on the right side of the road (about 1 mile beyond Hecker Pass Winery).
