  • AZT Shuttle - Picketpost to Kelvin

    Chase Bank

PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY BEFORE SIGNING UP FOR OPTION #2! This ride has two options. The first option is to begin at the Picketpost trailhead and ride south approximately 10 miles south on the AZT (or less if you prefer), then turn around and return to the trailhead. Most people turn around before Martinez Canyon since the trail begins to trend down after that point. This option is easier than the full option, but will still take 3 or 4 hours to complete. It is mostly uphill on the way out, and mostly downhill on the return. Intermediate riders will have no trouble on this section which is well marked and has great views of Picketpost Mountain and the Mazatzals. Definitely a great ride still worthy of the 2 hour drive from Tucson! The second option is an all day endurance ride over challenging and rugged backcountry terrain offering amazing views of the Gila River canyons. It is meant for experienced riders who are comfortable being on their bikes all day. We will ride passages 16 and 17 of the AZT south from Picketpost to the Gila river in Kelvin. The route is about 38 miles in length and has over 5,000 total feet of climbing. We will leave a shuttle vehicle in Kelvin at the Gila river and then drive up to the Picketpost trailhead in Superior; this is the starting point. Unlike typical SAMBA rides, you will ride at your own pace and riders should be comfortable navigating on their own. We will only stop at major intersections to regroup. We will wait for you in Kelvin if you are doing the whole thing and need a ride back to Picketpost. Basic route finding skills are required and GPS is higly recommended! This ride will take most intermediate riders 6 to 8 hours to complete. Bring at least 3 liters of water (1 gallon is ideal) with you as none is available along the way. Tubeless tires with fresh sealant are also a must on this trail. Registration for option #2 is limited to 5 people because of this being a shuttle ride, unless you want to drive there yourself. Meet at Chase Bank at 6:30am if you want to shuttle, otherwise meet at the Picketpost trailhead at 8:30am. We will begin the ride by 9am! • AZT Passage 15 (Tortilla Mountains)

    11625 N Oracle Rd

PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY BEFORE SIGNING UP FOR OPTION #2! Meet at Chase Bank at 7:00am if you want to carpool, otherwise meet at the Freeman trailhead at 8:30am. We will begin the ride by 9am! This ride has two options. The first option is to begin at the Freeman trailhead and ride north for approximately 15-16 miles on passage 15 of the AZT (or less if you prefer), then turn around and return to the trailhead. Most people turn around at the gate above Ripsey wash. This option is easier than the full option, but will still take 3 or 4 hours to complete. It is sometimes referred to as the "Boulders section" and is mostly downhill on the way out, and mostly uphill on the return. This option is about 31 miles round trip. Intermediate riders will enjoy this section which is fairly well marked and has great views of the Tortilla mountains and Ripsey ridge. Definitely a great ride still worthy of the 2 hour drive from Tucson! The second option is an all day endurance ride over more challenging terrain offering expansive views of the Gila River canyons and Tortilla mountains from the top of Ripsey ridge. It is meant for experienced riders who are comfortable being on their bikes all day. We will ride passage 15 of the AZT nouth from the Freeman Rd all the way to the trailhead in Kelvin. From there we will take the Florence-Kelvin highway (graded dirt road, all uphill) for about 12 miles to Tecolate Ranch Rd, then some ATV/Jeep tracks, finally retracing our route on the AZT back to Freeman Rd again. This option is about 52 miles in length and has over 5,000 total feet of climbing. Unlike typical SAMBA rides, you will ride at your own pace and riders should be comfortable navigating on their own. We will only stop at major intersections to regroup. Basic route finding skills are required and GPS is higly recommended! This ride will take most intermediate riders 6 to 8 hours to complete.
