Food Comparison

Hosted by: Vicki
It's a food comparison meetup where people can bring some of their long term foods from various companies (the good, bad and the ugly) and can compare flavor, quality, etc. amongst them all. I hope this will help everyone avoid spending money on their food storage only to find out what they have stored is just nasty or wonderful.

Sunday, February 24th @ 2:30pm (until about 4 or so)
Martha Cooper Library - Small Meeting Room

Vicki - Thank you for leading the food comparison. It was wonderful having the opportunity to compare all the products. There are choices among the delectable concoctions. I agree with Loren in line of the brands. I am looking forward to future comparisons.
Loren - I am glad you enjoyed the MRE's. If you want a quickly prepared meal in one, that is the way to go. A plus is each military MRE includes a heater.

Cheryl, I would really like the name of the company you ordered yours from so I can include some in our collection. Thanks, when you get a chance, please e-mail me! :-)

Hi Dave, The responses were quite varied. Many of us were surprised by how good the MRE's that Cheryl brought actually were! My prefered brands were Shelf Reliance and Provident Pantry by Emergency Essentials. Mountain House was also quite good. I think the least favored was Wise Foods. We weren't able to taste the white buckets that they sell at Cost Co, as no one made any of their products. Hopefully others will respond as well.

for those that werent able to make it, what was the concensus? I know there will be some that differ from the main group on reviews, but were there clear favorites?

Thank you so much Vicki! It was a great idea for a way to get to know each other better and to explore different food products!

With this size of a group and to make it as fair as possible, please everyone bring their own plate/bowl, etc. Jennifer has offered to bring utensils (Thank you!) and I'll bring some paper towels. If the just-add-water-entrees are made before hand and brought in warm (potluck style) like I am doing, then hot water is completely optional. I will also bring a few freeze-dried fruits/veggies, etc. You can most certainly determine taste and quality by sampling those dry. This will allow more time for sampling and discussion. Food set up will start at 2:30 so sampling can begin about 2:45-3:00. See everyone tomorrow! :)

Please see #11 - food may be served. I'm sure that Vicky would have checked this out before organizing. I didn't read anything about rules regarding plugging in appliances. Karen's idea of an electric tea pot would probably do the trick. If not allowed, perhaps we could all bring our thermos(s) filled with hot water?

I will bring utensils. We will still need cups, plates and bowls.

Also, has anyone verified we can bring food and drink? I heard that these items weren't allowed in the meeting rooms. (I have not independently verified this however.)

I don't know what I'm brining yet in the way of food.

I don't know that the library allows burners/stoves. That's why I am doing it at home and bringing it in a crockpot potluck style. This is meant to be a tasting comparison not a cooking demo.

  • K-Bay

We probably at least need some way to make hot water, right?

    February 19, 2013

an electric hot plate or butane a camper stove

    February 19, 2013

  • Vicki

We can use crockpots. I'm planning to cook the food at home then bring it in a crockpot to keep it warm.

Just wondering about how the food is to be heated. The library allows us to use burners?

    February 19, 2013

  • Vicki

Perhaps those that would like to attend, but do not have food to bring, could bring things like napkins, spoons, small disposable bathroom cups, etc. for us all to use.

I have various camping/trekking brands of freeze dried foods. The kind you can buy at REI and the like - I know folk who swear by the stuff.

Kate, you don't need to bring food or money. Just come and learn from others' experiences!

As a novice prepper on a budget, I don't have any food to bring. Is it possible to pay a small fee instead?
