Dewey Point Snowshoe at Sunset

  • Flying J Travel Plaza Inc

17047 Zachary Road, Bakersfield, CA (map)

    35.535995 -119.186974

  • Take the Merced Exit off 99.
  • Why I love this hike: I have done this trail once before in the moon light and it was one of my most memorable outdoor experiences. The combination of sunset colors over Yosemite Valley and the silvery moonlight reflecting off snow-laden pines is magical. AND this snowshoe is appropriate for beginners.

The Skinny: We will launch from the Badger Pass Cross Country Ski Center located in Yosemite National Park at 2pm.  From there, we walk up an unplowed road for half a mile then cut off to take a gently sloping trail to Dewey Point.  The plan is to get to Dewey Point, which overlooks Yosemite Valley, at sunset.  After enjoying snacks (warm ones with camp stoves recommended) and sunset colors, we will return by the same route, lit by a bright moon.

    Stats:

    Total Mileage: 7

    Elevation:  700'

It's Winter! So extra preparations need to be taken. You'll need to bring chains for your car, even if the weather looks good. Bring more layers of clothes than you think you'll need.  I recommend fleece, wool and synthetics instead of cotton clothing.  Boots, beanies, and gloves are a must.  It will be very cold.

A Consideration: This is a long drive to make late at night.  If people show an interest in staying the night near Yosemite, we can discuss accomodation options as the date approaches.

If I need to cancel this hike, I will come up with a replacement hike - probably Devil's Punchbowl. This wiill be a closer drive for the Bakerfield group, but will double the drive time for Fresno folks. I'm open to suggestions.

The road is gated at the turnoff, not at Badger.

I spoke to a ranger yesterday afternoon. Still gated at Chinquapin, only hiking routes are up the road or up 4 mile (which is open), tunnel view, or Panorama/Pohono. All things being equal - I'm going to the Diving Board instead. Happy trails.

Putting myself on the wait list in case it becomes Devil's Punchbowl, thanks.

Has there been any change? Is this hike still likely to cancel?

Devil's Punchbowl would be nice, maybe on a Saturday.

Thanks Lori, Jill should be making a final go/no go decision a day or two before the event.

Not enough snow, but take yaktrax for ice. I am probably going to camp near Dewey overnight the same weekend so may see you out there.

Jill, or anyone: do we have a solution for the snow shoe rental??

    December 27, 2013

    • Jill W.

Unfortunately snowshoe rental situation isn't looking good for those of you who do not own shoes. I received bad info. from Sportschalet and renting in Frssno will be problematic. I suggest asking around to borrow some (assuming the snow is there for us!)

Okay, thanks Jill. Keep us updated on the snow situation, and if need be, Ill buy snow shoes.

I have found out tonight that sport chalet does NOT rent snowshoes, nor does ANY place in Bakersfield. I know, because I checked. WHERE can we rent snowshoes??

    December 23, 2013

    • John

Thanks Jill! I stopped by the Sport Chalet and asked the rental department directly. I also called sports authority, and dicks sporting goods. None of them rent snowshoes and they all said no one in Bakersfield does. Feel free to confirm it though. As a last resort, I'm prepared to buy snow shoes (expensive!).
