Indian Wells Valley Four Peak Day Hike

HIKING IN INDIAN WELLS VALLEY IS A TOTAL BLAST!

Hiking Category

This is a class 2 and 3 hike that is strenuous and it requires a wide variety of skills to complete. The weather can be unpredictable, and we will need a volunteer to drive a short distance on a good dirt road to get to the parking area. There are sections that are very steep going up as well as down which are all cross country and trekking poles are very helpful in these sections. There is a small amount of climbing as well as some boulder scrambling. This loop hike is about 7 miles with an elevation gain of about 4221'. While this is not the most difficult hike in the world it does require a variety of skills. This is for experienced hikers so if you are interested in attending then please join the waiting list, and you will be added once you are approved.

Hiking Plan

  • We will meet at the Sierra Gateway in South Lake at 7:00.
  • We will carpool/caravan to Powers Well (3530') [masked], [masked]) located in Indian Wells Valley.
  • We should be hiking by 8:00am.
  • We will hike 2.25 miles with an elevation gain of 3121 feet to the summit of HPS Backus (6651') [masked], [masked]).
  • We will hike northwest along the ridgeline over Bump 6582 to the top of Eastmost Peak (6600') [masked], [masked]). This section is .75 miles with an elevation gain of 300 feet.
  • We will continue along the ridge for .5 miles with an elevation gain of 300 feet to Mica Peak (6515') [masked], [masked]).
  • We will hike along the ridgeline .5 miles with an elevation gain of about 500 feet to HPS Russell Peak (6696') [masked], [masked]).
  • We will return a short distance along the ridgeline to the midpoint of the Mica/Russell saddle. We will scree ski down to the mine. (.6 miles).
  • We will follow the mine road, and then head cross country back to the vehicles. (2.25 miles).

Class What?

It is important that we all understand the rating system that organizers use on their hikes. For my hikes I generally use something close to the Yosemite Decimal System. I have seen many different versions of this system, and many are adamant that their version is the right version and etc.. The best description I have seen of the five classes that seems to encompass the most general idea may be found at Climber.org under ‘Five Classes of Climbing Difficulty’ ( click here ).

A fantastic day! I had a great time, met some new hikers and caught up with some I already knew. The weather was fine - a little cold wind near the top of peaks, but otherwise perfect.

With out a doubt a great bunch. The hike was a success and the weather held out for us which was a blessing. The group which has hiked together many times before made me feel welcome and just like one of the group. Thank you all for making it a very enjoyable hike and thank you Nathan for hosting the event, you watched over everyone and made sure they were able to complete the entire hike with motivation and encouragement. I look forward to other hikes with the Kern Valley River Hiking Club.

  • Tom A.

Is it possible that this trip to be canceled because of the rain and the snow by snow I mean on Highway 58 or up in Isabella

    December 20, 2012

    • Alice

Well have to keep an eye on the weather prediction but right now it doesn't look like the passes are in danger of closing. I'll certainly be prepared for wet weather on Saturday but we may get lucky.

      December 20, 2012

    • Tom A.

      Ok

      December 20, 2012

  • Lisa W.

I am going to have to excuse myself from this hike. I am going to have to help a family out and be at work on Saturday, and my employees already have plans to be out of town, so I am stepping up to the plate for this family.

  • Jill W.

Alice, if Holly goes I'm obligated to go throug south lake to pick her up.

    December 18, 2012

  • Scott C.

Nathan, I will meet you at South Lake; I think it is faster via Isabella route. Cheveron station for anyone that wants to meet me there at 5:45.

    December 18, 2012

  • Alice

Okay, if Bakersfield people want to go via Tehachapi, and that's probably faster, we should meet at the Weedpatch Starbuck's around 5:45 and then meet at the brewery.

    December 18, 2012

  • Tom B.

I think the Bakersfield drivers will be traveling via Tehachapi. I will meet you all at the brewery. I will probably take my truck. It looks like you are attacking the peaks from a northern approach in IWV Canyon. It will be a new route for me.

    December 18, 2012

  • Kevin O.

Sam???... Jim Sr.???... I think I want to go. Will you guys carry me?

    December 18, 2012

  • Alice

I think we'll need two or three vehicles going from Bakersfield - we will also have Rosa and Jim Sr going, as well as Scott and Lisa and maybe others?? I'm planning to be at the Chevron about 5:45.

    December 18, 2012

  • Jill W.

We may have the elusive Holly and Sam along for this one, so tjhe Highlander may be a good ideA. These two will confirm with me probably the night before and I'll let you know .

    December 18, 2012

  • Kevin O.

Nathan, Have you closed the application list for this hike? My son, James would like to go. Alice and Jill can vouch for him.
Alice, If approved, could James carpool with you and Jill? If you are short on room, he could take the Highlander and drive you all.

    December 18, 2012

  • Scott C.

    December 16, 2012

Still no waiting list available - can you add me please.

    December 10, 2012

  • Jill W.

Nathan, where is the waiting list option? Can you add me to the list?

    December 8, 2012

  • Jill W.

    Sounds good, Alice.

    December 4, 2012

  • Alice

Nathan, if Rosa signs up I can vouch that she is a strong hiker and can do this one! Jill, if you go I'll ride with you if you'd like.

    December 4, 2012

  • Jill W.

Wow, Nathan. Finally a Saturday hike! I may be interested in this one, but need to: a. Get all of my Chistmas shopping done earlt and b. Check with Sam.
