Re: [Kern-Tulare-Hikers] Ruby and Bill Jenkins - A Tribute

A great tribute, and everyone should read it, and know all about this history. I always love hearing about wilderness torch-bearers who actually make things happen.

I discovered the "Self-propelled.." books, by JC Jenkins and Rudy Jenkins a few years ago while browsing Amazon, bought them, and use them a lot, mainly for the incredible topo maps in the back of the books. There are many trails "lost" to abandonment by trail crew, and many that are not accurately placed on topo maps. Jim Jensen re-mapped all the trails, and so far I have found them very accurate, and very useful for finding old and little-used trails. Too bad the USGS didn't revise their maps based on his info! I photocopy Jenkins maps and carry them on hikes. Their heirs should be proud.

Reita Hamilton was kind enough to send us a short history and tribute to Ruby, Bill, and Jim Jenkins.  Bill passed away just recently of old age.  Please see Ruby and Bill Jenkins - The Kern River Valley Days in the Pages section to read the story of the founders of the original Kern River Valley Hiking Club.

Thanks,

Alice
