Spanish Book Club (October) - with tapas & wine
DESCRIPTION Join our Spanish Book Club once a month, where we discuss contemporary and classic books in Spanish, whilst enjoying delicious food and drink from the author's country of birth. The book for October is the highly acclaimed Nada by Carmen Laforet. WHAT'S INCLUDED: The participation fee includes a copy of the book, Spanish nibbles & wine, and a session co-ordinated by our experienced tutor, Luis. The book club is held by the school, Spanish Marks, and all proceeds are going to the children's charities, Shaftesbury Young People and Asociación Fatima. The maximum number of participants is 12, so we recommend to book today as there is great demand! EVENT DESCRIPTION: We have a relaxed atmosphere, with most of the discussion in Spanish. It is an event for those who love literature and Spanish, and want to spend an evening discussing the chosen book, whilst enjoying tapas and a glass of wine. It is not a language lesson, but an informal discussion about the book and it's themes, allowing you to practice Spanish in a warm, friendly and culturally-rich setting! Receive a copy of Nada when you purchase a ticket, so you can read it in advance. Buy before 18th September, to receive free delivery of the book. Tickets bought after this date will need to collect the book from Hotel Strand Continental, 143 Strand, WC2R 1JA. ABOUT NADA AND LEVEL OF SPANISH: Nada was Carmen Laforet's first novel which she wrote when she was 23. It created a sensation in Barcelona when it was published. The book recounts in cooly understated first-person prose, the experiences of Andrea, an 18 year old orphan from the provinces who arrives in Barcelona to stay with her deceased mother's relatives while she goes to university. Laforet makes us feel the force of this young woman's pent-up hunger to escape the oppressiveness of village life. Yet not is all as it seems, and when Andrea re-enters the family home on Calle de Aribau she finds both the house and her relatives nightmarishly transformed from the effects of the Civil War. We recommend those who have an intermediate level of Spanish to attend this event. FUTURE EVENTS: The book club is held once a month, with a different book each month. We change the country, theme and style of literature, and always choose highly acclaimed books of great quality. ¡Esperamos verte pronto!
