ABOUT 'EL GENERAL EN SU LABERINTO' AND LEVEL OF SPANISH:

The novel is a fictionalised account of the last months of Simón Bolívar's life - liberator and leader of Gran Colombia.

General Simón Bolívar, "The Liberator" of the countries of South America, gives, for the last time, a nostalgic trip along the Magdalena River in which he revisits cities on its banks and relives his triumphs, passions and betrayals.Passionate about the memories of the power he had, and of his dream of continental unity that he never achieved, Bolívar is a poignant example of how much can be gained — and lost — in one lifetime.

Written by Gabriel García Márquez one of the most significant authors of the 20th century, and was awarded the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature.

The book club is suitable for those who have at least an intermediate level of Spanish. If you can understand approximately 80% of the below extract we recommend you joining us for this session!:

José Palacios, su servidor más antiguo, lo encontró flotando en las aguas depurativas de la bañera, desnudo y con los ojos abiertos, y creyó que se había ahogado. Sabía que ése era uno de sus muchos modos de meditar, pero el estado de éxtasis en que yacía a la deriva parecía de alguien que ya no era de este mundo.

FUTURE EVENTS:

The book club is held once a month, with a different book each month. We change the country, theme and style of literature, and always choose highly acclaimed books by great authors. ¡Esperamos verte pronto!
