Backcountry Skiing and Ice Climbing in Ouray!

Join Anita and I for a three day weekend of backcountry skiing and ice climbing in Ouray, CO over the Martin Luther King holiday weekend. The San Juan mountains near Ouray and Silverton have the most incredible backcountry skiing that I have experienced in Colorado. There are fantastic lines with huge vertical drops through deep champagne powder.  The Ice Park in Ouray is an awesome place to climb ice with hundreds of fat lines and is only minutes from town. We can also soak at night in the Ouray Hot Springs and nearby Orvis Hot Springs.

We will drive to Ouray on Friday night, Jan. 17th, stay in Ouray Fri night, Sat, Sun, and then drive home Monday night. Our tentative plan is to backcountry ski on Sat, ice climb on Sun, and backcountry ski on Mon. If there is fresh powder we may ski more days or ice climb if there is not.  But people are welcome to ski or ice climb on whatever days they want, or do whatever makes them happy.  We will bring a rope, two sets of ice tools, and crampons for ice climbing.  If we have more people and ropes then we can set up multiple lines to climb different routes.

Anita and I just booked a room in the Ouray Chalet Inn for the three day weekend.  I think they may be full now.  My recommendation for everyone is to pile in some of the inexpensive rooms in the nearby Comfort Inn.  They have rooms with 2 queen beds for $79 a night. Put a bunch of people in those rooms and it will be really cheap.

Skiers definitely bring skins to go uphill. Snowshoers are welcome to join the fun and laugh at the skiers faceplanting. Doggies are welcome too.

We will always try to ski low angle slopes (less than 25-30 degrees) or in the trees in order to minimize avalanche risk.  It is highly recommended to bring an avalanche beacon, probe, and shovel to improve group safety.  If you do not have this gear then you can still come since we will try to avoid avalanche terrain, but please be careful.

You can call me at[masked] if something comes up.

Lets go ski that deep San Juans powder and climb some fat ice!

Well our trip to Ouray was great. The road to Silverton was closed so we ice climbed two days, and skied one day. Saturday, we went ice climbing in the Ouray Ice Park in the Grad School area. Sunday, we backcountry skied an awesome line near Ophir, Colorado. We climbed up to the ridge above Swamp Canyon, which had gorgeous views of the surrounding craggy peaks, and then we skied a fantastic long line through fun glades loaded with deep powder. Sunday, we ice climbed again in the School Room area and got to climb a wide variety of routes. A fun trip with lots of fun people!

Hey All. There are still rooms at the Chalet Inn, and I just reserved one with two queen beds for $240 for all 3 nights. Please let me know if you'd like to share or not. I'm happy having several people in the room to be economical. If I don't have enough committed people, I will cancel/downsize the room, so please let me know soon.

Chad, we can fit you in somewhere, either my room or another, I spoke with my room folks and we're all cool with that, so come and we'll work it out.

I'm staying at the Ouray Chalet Inn. If anyone is wanting to carpool, I have a Landcruiser that can comfortably take 4 more + gear. I'll also bring extra tools and extra crampons.

Hey Chad, room is full and I only have 2 in my car right now, so I have room for carpooling. However, I want to run a different schedule for Sunday and hit a bar by 1pm to see the Bronco's game. If that works for you, you're welcome to join. I'll be at the Woolly lot at 5:30 .

If you're coming back on Sunday that won't work. But if you're staying in Ouray and watching the game there then I could carpool to Ouray but will be climbing on Sunday most likely.'

It doesn't look like I would be able to drive down until Saturday.
Anyone have a room with a space still available?
I would happily carpool if anyone else can't leave till Saturday.
It's been a few years since I've been in the ice-park, but in the past really long pieces of webbing (20-40') and cordolettes were very handy for setting up anchors. Flip-flops are also really nice for walking from the dressing rooms to the hot springs.

We should probably start getting this trip organized. Does everyone have some lodging? If not, try the Ouray Chalet Inn or the Comfort Inn and pile in a room together to make it cheap.

We are now thinking to maybe climb ice on Sat, backcountry ski on Sun, and ice climb on Mon. I know of 4 excellent backcountry ski lines near Silverton. However, since the Ice Park is such a rare opportunity to climb lots of ice, and it is far away, maybe we should do more of that. We can decide when we are there and check out the snow conditions.

For ice climbing does everyone at least have a harness, mountaineering boots, and crampons? It looks as though Tom and I will bring tools. You can rent ice gear in Ouray. What about backcountry ski gear? I know some of you have joined us on previous backcountry trips.

Looking forward to fat ice, deep powder, and hot springs!

      Also, I'm bringing a rope.

Rebeka, that's no problem picking up your rental gear at 9 AM. You can just find us later in the Ice Park and then climb with us.

Chad, Alex, Kristopher, why don't you guys just get a room together?

Does anyone want to pile into a room with me? Also, I have never ice climbed, is this a problem (I will borrow ice tools and bring a 70m dry rope)?

    • Kristopher N.

      Sure thank you!

      January 7, 2014

Any room left to share a room?

      January 16, 2014

    Hot Springs/Bathing Suit:
Don't forget your bathing suit. We are going to the Ouray Hot Springs Pool one night and Orvis Hot Springs the other night.

    Carpool:
Jacob is right. If you would like to carpool then lets all meet at 5:30 pm at Wooly Mammoth at the KK sign, and arrange the carpool there. Anita, I and the kids will show up too and we can all caravan together and have dinner along the way.

Anybody have a room that can take in two more?

    January 10, 2014

The chalet inn would be my first choice, then the comfort in. How many are in your party?

      January 14, 2014

Hey Kristopher, haven't heard from you so I went ahead and joined another group in a room. Looks like Chad needs a room, so maybe you guys can room together? Sorry about that.

I guess anyone interested in carpooling, meet around the KK sign at the Woolly Mammoth lot at 5:30. My number is[masked] if you are running late I can let people know so that we can optimize our carpooling. See you tomorrow!

    Carpooling:
Our car (Rom & Anita) is now full because we just found out that we now have to take the kids with us. They will just stay in the hotel room or hang out in town while we climb or ski each day. We will probably leave Denver around 5-6 pm on Friday night if any Denver cars would like to caravan with us to Ouray and have dinner along the way.

    Itinerary:
Sat: ice climb, Sun: backcountry ski, Mon: ice climb
Because of the 550 road closure, and the San Juans have not received a lot of fresh snow recently, plus the Ouray Ice Park is so great, we are now planning on 2 days ice and 1 day ski.

    Saturday Meet:
Lets all meet at 8:00 AM at the lobby of the Ouray Chalet Inn on Saturday morning. We will go climb at the Ouray Ice Park. Make sure that you are completely ready to go at 8:00 AM (finished breakfast, all geared up, ...) We need to leave by 8:00 AM to have any chance of climbing some of the good routes. Make sure to bring a harness, boots, crampons, helmet, biners, ...

Just a heads up that Red Mtn Pass is still closed due to a rock slide, no idea of when they will re-open.

    January 15, 2014

    • Rom M.

Yes I just checked and 550 is currently closed. I am hoping that it might open by this weekend. If it stays closed then we can always go backcountry skiing up Camp Bird Mine road towards Yankee Boy Basin or drive around and ski near Telluride.

I wouldn't mind carpooling or joining a car in Grand Junction if anyone's schedule matches and has room. I can be in GJ by 7:30 or 8pm on Friday, and I have a place I can leave my car that is 2 miles off the route straight thru to Ouray from Denver. Any takers?

    January 15, 2014

  • Chad

I'd like to carpool and share a room wherever there's room. I have 60m rope, ice tools, etc.

    January 14, 2014

    Meet you guys there!

    January 13, 2014

  • Kristopher N.

I will be in Gunnison the 17th if anybody wants to come through and car pool.
