What we're about

PLEASE NOTE: We are continuing to operate the Food Bank during the pandemic on a modified schedule. The schedule will be updated here on Meetup as well as posted on the parish door of St. John's Lutheran. However, to ensure everyone's safety, we are only operating on a "drop in" basis and not allowing anyone to remain onsite. If you are interested in volunteering, please email us directly: FoodBank@saintjohnslutheranmontreal.org. Thank you!

We are people helping people, no questions asked. We operate downtown with 2 main ministries: a Food Bank and Sandwich Ministry. If you are interested in helping others with compassion, freely given (rather than the patronizing, conditional approach of many services), our ministries are a place where you can have a real impact. What is unique about these services?

Food Bank/Community Cafe: We aim to give out food in the most dignified manner possible. We don't assume people are cheats and make them prove they are really 'needy'. Anyone can need emergency food support for so many different reasons. We invite visitors in for coffee and companionship, to help fight the social isolation of poverty. We are not professional service workers: so we don't try to fix people's problems. We just foster non-judgmental good company: a good laugh, interesting conversation, and listening supportive ear. Over all, our philosophy is: it's none of our business, we're just here to care. We give out bags of non-perishable food to visitors 4 times a month.

Sandwich Ministry: We make sandwiches and coffee, which we take out to homeless people on our downtown streets. We take our time to chat with them, offering comfort and compassion. We also sometimes give essentials that are difficult for them to come by: underwear, socks, gloves, deodorant, etc.

All are welcome: While we are obviously inspired by the Christian tradition of service and compassion, we welcome and serve all, regardless of their religion or atheism. These are NOT conversion ministries: the sole goal is to connect with others with compassion.

Food Bank distribution/ community cafe

St. John's Lutheran Church

Volunteers greet visitors, take their order, pack up their bag, make coffee, and chat with visitors. We aren't just feeding their bodies, we are bringing together a really amazing group of people and fighting the social isolation of poverty. Our less fortunate neighbors are really appreciating having a place to come and meet new people. We offer you a bag of food as thanks for your help. Please arrive on time as there is usually a rush of visitors right when we open. How to find us: We work out of the church basement, next door to the main entrance of the church. Ring the doorbell when you arrive. If you need a stair-free entrance, there is one behind the church, which you can find via the lane way, from Prince Arthur. Please let me know if you have any other accessibility issues :)
