Global Game Jam 2014 @ UMSL

Are you ready for what's sure to be the biggest Game Jam St. Louis has ever seen? This is the 2014 St. Louis Global Game Jam (http://globalgamejam.org) at UMSL.

If you've never been to one before, a Game Jam is an organized event where anyone interested in game development can come and join a small team in spending the entire weekend creating a video or board game from start to finish. Participants are given a theme and 48 hours to create a game, which is then demoed in front of all participants at the conclusion of the weekend.

Our sponsors have really gone all out this year, and we'll have meals, T-shirts, and many more surprises for everyone who attends. If you've never been to a Game Jam before, this will be an event to absolutely not miss. Invite your friends!

For more information check out www.stlgamejam.com or www.globalgamejam.org

It looks like Game Maker and GameSalad (the two game engines recommended in Elonka's email from a few days back) are both only for Windows or Mac. My only laptop is Linux. Does anyone know if LateralGM compatible enough with Game Maker to work? Or if there will be groups of people using an alternate Linux-compatible tool?

      What about wine?

      January 24, 2014

    • Randy

@Jason: Only in moderation, it is a public event :P (and sorry, I don't of any game editors/engines in linux... well, except blender, but that's meh)

This will be my first jam, just want to get involved, Im planning on bring a pc and mac mini. Is space something I need to keep in mind

    January 23, 2014

    • Wes E.

Probably not. There's plenty of room, but there are also going to be a lot of people there. Worst case scenario you might have to set up both and share with a teammate.

  • Aric A.

Yikes I'll be traveling down to St Louis to get there and will arrive late by 1-2 hours. Is that going to be a huge issue?

    January 22, 2014

    • Randy

Shouldn't be a problem. You'll miss out on the brainstorming probably, but that'd probably be it. You can still give out ideas and such when you get here :D

I feel quite silly asking this, but I promise I did read all the FAQs.
I read somewhere that we're allowed to stay at the University all weekend? Is that true? And if so, what sort of personal supplies should we bring? I'm not sure at all. :?

    January 21, 2014

    • Wes E.

It is true! You can stay the whole weekend or go home. If you stay please bring deodorant, 2 changes of clothes, a toothbrush, contacts, a sleeping bag and some pillows, etc. That kind of stuff.

I'm not sure we have access to a shower though, but I'd come prepared for that just in case!

Hi all, please ensure that you are registered at globalgamejam.org and connected to the UMSL site in order to get the email blasts. So far we have 102 people signed up, and we expect that number to climb quite a bit over the next few days! Please also check http://stlgamejam.com for maps and whatnot. Registration starts Friday, at 4 pm in Room 222 of UMSL SSB, and the Theme will be announced at 6 pm. Please try to come early so you can ensure you can connect to Wi-Fi, because things will be moving fast from then on!

I'm super excited about the game jam. I thought I would share this link with everyone. It has a ton of resources and inspiration for the game jam and game design in general. Enjoy: http://www.pixelprospector.com/indie-resources/

Hi I am not a programmer or coder yet. I likely never will be. I have looked at JavaScript though in code. I have been studying Graphic Design and plan to get an AAS. I am in school now at Meramec. I love photography and I am taking Maya and 3Dprintng at Meramec soon!
I will likely just watch at the Game jam and try to meet Graphic designers and network with those in to animation. I will enjoy meeting anyone of course. I would enjoy coming up with an idea though brainstorming like we did at Asynchrony in two groups.
Where do we park at UMSL? Which side of campus is the Global game jam? I will likely not stay the whole weekend. I may just come on Friday.
    See everyone soon. :)

Also, you don't need to program to make a game. You could use Twine, Game Maker, Game Salad, or any other simple game creation tools. If you're seriously interested in game development there's no real excuse not to participate fully.

      January 18, 2014

    • Randy

You can even make board games or trading card games, things of that sort, it's not limited to video games. :D

  • Marcus F.

Hi, I have a question. I have to work Friday untill 5, and I have to work Saturday from 8-12. Is it possible for me to come in Friday night, leave Saturday morning and go to work, then come back to the Jam?

    January 9, 2014

    • Wes E.

Yes! Just be up front and honest with your team so that they know what to expect.

      January 9, 2014

  • Wes E.

I updated the event information above, but please also sign up here:

    http://globalgamejam.org/2014/jam-sites/university-missouri-st-louis-information-systems-programming-club

You'll need to before the event is over anyways, so it's easier to just get it out of the way now.

Any groups looking for a programmer and maybe doing stuff with unity?

    January 8, 2014

    • Ray S.

I'm definitely interested in working with unity, although I am not starting my own group since this is my first jam. I'm running 4.3 pro on my laptop.

      January 8, 2014

  • Marcus F.

Sup everybody. If anybody is using Game Maker 8.1 or lower lemme know!

    December 30, 2013

  • Sara Marisa S.

SO EXCITED! If anyone wants to form a group, let me know. I can do concept artwork and 2d art for the game.

    December 28, 2013

    • Randy

Normally, teams are formed after game ideas have been thrown out there. This way everyone can work on the game they want to. That said, forming a group beforehand is fine, but it's a lot of fun to work with new people. Gets new ideas and such thrown out there.

      December 30, 2013

    • Sara Marisa S.

Randy, it was not my intention to ruin the organic process of team-building based on pitches at the actual GGJ, and I do fully intend to meet new people to work with, especially those with different skills and expertise than my own. Thanks for clarifying.

      December 30, 2013

  • Ray S.

Looking forward to the Game Jam! I'd like to join a team using unity. I have a pro license that needs to be put to good use.
